Ever read "Lust for Life" by Irving Stone?

It's a fictionalized biography of Vincent Van Gogh, based on Van Gogh's three volumes of letters to his brother, Theo.

Van Gogh spent a lifetime discovering the meaning of his life. He labored for years to find the answer to life's question before he discovered what he felt he was truly meant to be... an artist. He was passionate about life and drove himself to exhaustion capturing the very essence of life in his paintings.

After reading this book, you'll look at his paintings in a different light.

Have you found your true purpose in life? Have you given up on your dreams? Are you passionate about anything?

I am passionate about being open-minded. I try hard to be open to new things, and new ideas, and it bothers me when I'm surrounded by closed-minded people (ie- relatives).
I am passionate about art- I love to paint, I love to dance, sing, write, etc.
I have never discovered what my role in life is, or why I'm here, but I know that I have dreams, and I know what I want to do, and I have not yet given up on those dreams (which by now are about 13 years old, and on which I'm working).

Cheers

You are an artist...that is your role. It matters not that it has been 13 years...as long as you are working towards something.

If you haven't already...read "Lust for Life"...it is so great!

I haven't read that - but its going on my list...

Mind if I post the Iggy Pop song of the same name?

Lyrics by Iggy Pop, music by David Bowie.

Lyrics

Here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And the flesh machine
He's gonna do another striptease
Hey man where'd you get
That lotion? I been hurting
Since I bought the gimmick
About something called love
Yeah something called love
That's like hypnotizing chickens
Well I am just a modern guy
Of course I've had it in the ear before
'Cause of a lust for life
'Cause of a lust for life
I'm worth a million in prizes
With my torture film
Drive a G.T.O.
Wear a uniform
All on a government loan
I'm worth a million in prizes
Yeah I'm through with sleeping on the
Sidewalk - no more beating my brains
With the liquor and drugs
With the liquor and drugs
Well I am just a modern guy
Of course I've had it in the ear before
'Cause of a lust for life
'Cause of a lust for life
I got a lust for life
Got a lust for life
Oh a lust for life
Oh a lust for life
A lust for life
I got a lust for life
I got a lust for life
Well I am just a modern guy
Of course I've had it in the ear before
'Cause of a lust for life
'Cause of a lust for life
'Cause of a lust for life

Here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And the flesh machine
He's gonna do another striptease
Hey man where'd you get
That lotion? Your skin starts
Itching once you buy the gimmick
About something called love
Oh love love love
That's like hypnotizing chickens
Well I am just a modern guy
Of course I've had it in the ear before
'Cause of a lust for life
'Cause of a lust for life
Got a lust for life
Yeah a lust for life
I got a lust for life
Oh a lust for life
I got a lust for life
Yeah a lust for life
I got a lust for life
A lust for life
Lust for life
Lust for life

Hey, Dillinger, when I saw the thread title, the Iggy Pop song was the first thing I thought of. Glad I'm not the only lowbrow 'roun here...

lowbrow... that's funny!

I've never heard that song before (never really listened to Iggy Pop)... interesting lyrics! Sounds like something that I've been through...I love songs with angst.

I mentioned the book because Van Gogh was an extreme personality. Man, you feel his pain when you read this book. This guy was focused. He was so passionate about everything he did...if he had to make a choice between buying painting supplies or food...the man went hungry.

So he was a little crazy...aren't we all?

I think of a recent commercial...

If Iggy Pop has become theme music for commercials the the world may, indeed be nearing it's end...

What next... Sex Pistols sell toothpaste? Clash Musak?

When I saw the quotation marks, I first thought of the movie, with Kirk Douglas as van Gogh and Anthony Quinn as Gaugain. Guess that makes me middle-brow.

Funny you should mention that...I read the book first and the movie doesn't come close. But then again...movies never really capture a book (except for "The Outsiders") But the book really gets into Van Goghs obsessive behavior.

I did like Kirk Douglas in the role of Van Gogh...and Anthony Quinn was a good Gaugain. Funny that those two should room together...because Van Gogh loved people and Gaugain hated people. They say opposites attract.

It's a shame what Gaugain did to him...
