A little perspective

I think we need some.

This whole voter thing has gotten out of hand. I don't know what the problem is around these parts lately, some of it is due to an influx of trolls that are weighing on everyone's nerves, some of it is due to a bunch of egos that don't mix, some of it is due to plain don't-get-alongness.

Maybe a bit of away time from the GB is the thing. There are other things to talk about, though I'm sure trolls will follow where some of us lead. I've decided to take a hike from the GB because I have nothing to contribute to it. My topics are generally ignored in favor of fawning on others or, I get into pissing contests with trolls and someone gets hurt, or I'm just straight too mean.

I've talked to another member of the dog pound, and we pretty much agree that the GB went straight to hell as far as interest goes. It doesn't have much to offer us and we're only making it worse for the people who adore silly posting. However, that doesn't mean that the boards don't have anything to offer. There is this board, for one. And the editor's board, and the feedback board, and the story discussion board. If we could get a moderator in here to make sure it stays in track, then so much the better. Lit has plenty to offer, so I'll be staying here. I like it, it's very comfortable, and maybe I'll get more interested in writing again.

I'm not the only one to feel this way, no doubt. I can see plenty of frustration going on in the posts around here. MP is vastly irritated with the crap going on, Deborah has had it up to her gills obviously, I've gotten rather sick of my own superciliousness.

It seems we can't find a happy medium anywhere in the GB and we can't find a happy medium anywhere in the voting arena.

The voting thing is fucked because it has to rely on individual integrity. Most people have it. Some people do not. It's frustrating that there are malicious people out there who vote down just to be doing it. It's also frustrating to read something from an author who assumes that they're getting voted down because some malicious person is doing it.

It is obvious in Deborah's case that the troll is voting her down. It is obvious in MP's case that the troll is voting her down. In no other case have I seen a reason for a troll to vote people down, not even my own. Isn't it just a tidge egotistical to assume that because the votes were bad someone was tampering with them? Perhaps they're bad because they didn't like the story. They didn't get off to the story. It's awfully rude and shows a lack of personal responsibility and integrity to publicly assume that other authors are dabbling in voter fraud simply because they are getting more votes and better scores.

Yes. Voter fraud happens. It does not happen at the frequency everyone is making it out to happen. Oh yes, voting yourself up and others down is voter fraud. Aside from Deb and MP, I don't know of another single author with personal internet enemies. Particularly those who are new at posting on the boards. Just because you got a bad set of votes doesn't mean you didn't deserve them. People interpret votes to mean different things. They put the scales at 1-5, one being limp five being a sticky keyboard. Or one being the grammar reeked/two words misspelled/missed one comma and five being not a singlegrammar/spelling/punctuation error. Or it could be one is the story didn't interest them and five the story moved them.

A lot of times it's possible that they thought 1 was a good score. Or they didn't properly click a number before they submitted and it came out a 3. We aren't electing a president here and some of us are beginning to sound like Al Gore demanding a 275th recount of Florida, heck let's do other states while we're at it.

Laurel and Manu are doing the best that they can. They are only human and it makes me feel very good to know that they care this much about their authors that they'll go out of their way to try to accomodate us and fix the voter thing. I'm sure it frustrates them to no end as well. This is the reason that I write exclusively for literotica, because I know Laurel cares enough to try to take care of me, or at least my writings. Personally, I don't think that the voting fraud business can be fixed. If someone is determined enough they will find a way to defraud the system, period. I've got a personal goal that I've set for myself, and so far I'm accomplishing it. I have learned, the hard way, not to say anything about what makes me proud about my writing on the BB. But that's okay, it's enough for me to know what my goals for writing are and that I can accomplish them.

L & M are coming out with great things for the site, the games, the pix, the stories are all great, so is Manu's nekkid women pictures site. But I'm really looking forward to the eBook thing. I just have to figure out how to pay for it since I am currently sans credit card.

Anyway, the whole point to this long winded train of thought is that this is a great site. We've gotten rather close to it in the time we've been here and made it a part of our lives. Perhaps we've gotten too close. A little perspective is in order for some. You know, backing off a bit, letting our frustration and anger cool off and whatever was on the GB and voter fraud thing blow past. Then maybe we can sit back on our Laurels (what, I can't resist a pun!) and think about our own personal behavior while posting on this site. It's not the be all end all of life, but it's not unimportant either. L&M put a great deal of work into it, so do the authors who write, and the readers who give us feedback.

It's not just porn, it's a community. We just seemed to have a severe thunderstorm roll through and everyone's parade got rained on and the tornadoes took a swath out of the town. Some of us will weather it, some of us won't. It just takes a little perspective and objectivity. What's important here, and what's not.

I don't belong here.

Before I saw your announcement about leaving the General Board, I had not really noticed the other boards here at Lit. I have not read any of the stories, do not care for role playing, and feel no compulsion to post my picture, so I do not "fit" any of the Boards outside of the General Board and occasionally the How To Board. In fact, I feel completely out of place wandering this far away.

I have a question that I hope can be addressed here. Does Lit frequently experience this kind of "thunderstorm" and how long do they generally last? I enjoy coming here for the interactions between intelligent and interesting people from all over the world. But since joining a month and a half ago, so many of the people that prompted my joining have left the General Board. Can I expect their return, will new people of substance take their place, or is this a permanent loss?

Your honesty and integrity will be missed wherever you were that you won't now be. I know you despise fawning, and i'm not doing it, either, just wanted to say a true thing to you.

KM, I have been around Lit for many months, spent a lot of time as a lurker before posting my first story. I used to read a lot of the stories posted but then I got sidetracked into the boards. At first it was fun. I didn't venture away from the Authors Hangout very much, a few furtive forrays into the story ideas board were about as adventurous as I got, but the people were all polite and eager to listen to other opinions without flaming back or resorting to personal attacks. Then the weather changed. An electrical charge began to fill the air and the storm clouds mounted on the horizon. The next thing I knew everyone was either afraid to post an opinion or was viciously attacking someone else.

I don't know if it was a Troll that caused it. Hell I don't even know what a Troll is and I have read all of the troll threads I could find. But I see that interest in all the boards has dropped dramatically in the last couple of weeks. Don't believe me, look at the posting rate, deadsville!

I agree with you KM, we do need some perspective. I also think we all need a good dose of civility. I would love to see this site go back to what is was in January, but maybe it isn't the site that has changed, maybe it is me. Hell I know my stories are vastly different now than then. Lower rated too :(

I for one am going to take a little time to re-evaluate who I am and why am I here.

Looks like I might have to change email addresses anyway so now is as good a time for this as any.

Km, I'm sorry to see you leave the GB, but I do understand. I'm pretty new to posting, ignore the date, I posted maybe 10 times before March, but I have enjoyed your posts as much as anyone elses. I have seen the way the board has deteroirated, because I've gone back to read some old threads for insight into people. Heck, today I decided to read people's stories, to see what they are like. I must say, I hadn't realized you were the same person I had read with interest. Yes, duh me. Please know that I will continue to be an avid fan of all your writing, posts included. Thank you for contributing as much as you have.

Hey, KM, I am following you over here, even though I am not any kind of an author. I love reading the stories here & maybe one of these days, I will get up the nerve to submit something. Keep writing, I think you are very talented.

None of us were authors before we got one hot idea and just sat down and wrote it out. There are many very talented editors to help you iron out the wrinkles after you've edited your own work.

Write, babes. Just write.

And you belong here as much as any of us. Just cuz you haven't written anything yet doesn't mean you won't. It certainly doesn't mean someone as civil and thoughtful as you seem to be isn't welcome here with open arms.

We could use some captive readers. Tie you up, give you good food and pleasure slaves, and make you read AND respond to ALL our stuff. Yeh. I kinda like that idea...

Thank you for the welcome. With all the nonsense at the GB, I have been spending a lot of time at the story section. I have started putting some ideas down on paper, it is good therapy when the insomnia kicks in. I always vote on the stories I read & I do send feedback on most of them. I am finally taking the time to branch out & read stories in some of the other categories. There are some very talented writers here & I look forward to getting to know more of you. Keep up the good work!!!
