At the risk of starting a political topic......

We've all heard that Saddam was responsible for the deaths of many people. Has anyone ever actually heard a number attached to this? If so, could you provide a link?

I've tried to find that answer, but I can't find anything that gives a number, or even a reasonable estimate.

I DON't want to start a political argument or anything like that. I'm just looking for the answer to a question. I'm asking the question here because this forum is a very knowledgeable group of people.

Speaking of which, I've been living under a rock in regards of news lately. What's the staus on the guy? Trial rolling? Was he sentenced for something?

He was seen on a golf course in Florida and . . . no, that was someone else.

I don't think anybody ever tried to add it up. I don't remember the exact amount but it was a lot when they were showing the pictures over here of his gas victims. Was it mustard gas? I think so.

Are you talking about people he personally killed? Do wars count? If wars count, do you count the dead on both sides?

I haven't seen anything I would consider reliable and unbiased that gives any sort of hard number. I have seen claims ranging from "millions" to mere "hundreds of thousands."

The press made a big deal of Iraqi's searching mass graves around the prisons for missing loved ones and the discovery of warehouses full of skeletons from the Iran/Iraq war, and the discovery of various mass burial sites around the country.

I don't think there is any way to establish a firm number for the deaths caused by Saddam or any way to separate the deaths he caused directly and those his relatives, minions and cronys caused.

I's a little like trying to tabulate all of the deaths attributed to Hitler -- How many were directly ordered by Hitler, How many were the result of his fostering a society where people could commit murder with impunity, and how many were merely the result of the wars he started. Do we only count the 6.5 million jews killed in "The final Solution", or do we add the 10 million plus Russians and other war dead to Hitler's final total.

Personally, I think Saddam's total is far below his idol Hitler's -- probably somewhere in the vicinity of a mere 2.5 million Iraqi, Iranian and Kuwaiti dead as a result of his regime.

Now that Saddam isn't dictator of Iraq, who responsible for the latest body count?

Actually Weird, Stalin was Saddam's role model.

If you include all the wars and ethnic cleansing under his rule, 2.5 million sounds about right.
