US porn film industry forced to close down

LOS ANGELES - The multi-million-dollar US pornographic film industry, shaken Friday when two of its stars tested positive for the Aids virus, was beginning a two-month production shutdown to test some 45 other actors who had had on-camera unprotected sex with the two.

The Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation (AIM), which monitors the health of adult film actors, announced the moratorium and testing on Thursday and identified the two who tested positive for HIV as Darren James and Lara Roxx.

The production halt follows months of warnings from medical organisations that opposed films in which actors do not use condoms.

AIM frequently tests adult film stars for HIV, and only 17% of actors wear condoms.

The last actor to test positive was Tony Montana in 1999.

While X-rated production giant Vivid and other producers cancelled filming Thursday, some in the industry worried about the moratorium's financial consequences.

"I'm against any stop in production," said Tyler Cash, a producer with Sinamotion Pictures.

"It will put a lot of people out of business. You'll have people who will start losing their apartments. It's just not fair."

Another producer, Jill Kelly said in an ABC television that the moratorium would hurt financially, but she was willing to go along while the industry polices itself.

Several production companies are based north of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.

Jack Kyser, chief economist of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, said the adult film industry plays an important role in the local economy.

And the telephone has been ringing off the hook at an agency that represents porn actors.

"We've gotten calls from 15 companies who are shutting down," said Jim South, who owns the agency.

"We take these things seriously. Right now, there are companies who are not only cancelling future projects, but also cancelling movies already in production."
