A sentence written by a Chinese professor of English and checked by a native speaker (also a professor) might have grammatical problem as follows,

The poet presents some action objectively, but doing so in the words and through the emotional experiences of the actors and actresses.

I think the problem is the part "but doing so...", which should be "but he does so...". Please help. Thank you.

I agree with you.

Since "presents" (the poet presents) is in the present tense, "does" (but does so) should also be in the present tense. Both are actions of the poet, and both take place in the past.

i would submit that "but does so" is a more elegant re-phrasing but i agree that the phrasing as presented seems clunky.

i hate to be a grammar nazi but grammatic is already adjectival, the -al suffix is redundant.[/pendatic ass]

The sentence is poorly formed.

The poet presents some action objectively, but doing so in the words and through the emotional experiences of the actors and actresses. should be: The actor's nature shapes the poet's words.

How is it presented objectively if it's presented through the emotional experiences of the actors and actresses?
