A GERMAN REQUIEM by Philip Kerr.
The 3rd volume of the Nazi noir trilogy.
Berlin private investigator Bernie Gunther is recruited by the Russians to help an ex-Nazi arrested for murdering an American intelligence officer in Vienna, Austria. He takes the job after catching his school teacher wife in an alley with a mouthful of American cock, and departs after leaving her an adios note and a small bag of gold, to hold her until she earns enough Hershey bars from the GIs.
The plot is complex but works out at the end. In a nutshell the Americans, Russians, and Werewolves (neo-Nazis) all play for the same team, for the same outcome, and theyre not concerned about who gets his feelings (and more) hurt. I guessed who the bad actors are but the ending surprised me....its a loving wives tale at heart.
Kerr is a master of plot construction, and his prose is as good as Raymond Chandler's, but what ticks me off is how he rushes the end. Its one nick of time divine intervention after another. The first half has a nice, steady pace then its WHAM BAM THANK YOU MA'AM till the end. God catches every hail mary pass.
