Barak looked quietly up to the skies as he had many days before then. Hmm… smells of rain… I wonder if Selene will want to go for a walk. It had been a long time since they had gone for a walk, mostly because Selene refused to allow him to help her with her age and pain. They had argued over it for many days and many times, however the end result was always the same. In Selene’s eyes she had lived a peaceful and happy life. If it was her time to go, then the fates would cut her thread from the loom and she would pass away quite happily knowing that her life had been the best that it could be. It was incredibly frustrating for Barak however, because despite his human guise, the man was not human.
The look that he took was to allow him to remain with his master without standing out, for Barak was actually a Djinn. He had been created by God and unlike angels the Djinn had free will… well within the ties of the type of Djinn that had been created. He was a sexual Djinn and though those in the past had used him as nothing more than a play thing… Selene had not been like them. Instead, she had treated him as her partner which is why it did pain him greatly to see her refuse his help. Within the bounds of allowing her to enjoy herself sexually he could have removed the pain inside her which would in later times come to be known as cancer. He could have helped her to enjoy the last year of her life, or even have extended it by decades or even centuries.
Of course unlike Djinn, angels or God, humans lives did always have to end. Selene believed that the gods would be her guide, and Barak didn’t have the heart to tell her that the different gods she prayed to or worshiped were not what she thought they were. At the same time however, near the end he did have to bite his tongue sometimes. The sound of shuffling steps did break him from his thoughts however that morning, and seeing Selene make her way out onto the small porch that adorned her house, Barak smiled softly to her.
It looks like it is going to rain… “
Selene’s voice was cracked with age and yet her enthusiasm for the world was something that Barak had always admired. He but nodded to her as she made that small announcement and gently guiding her over and onto his lap, He settled her into her arms which was a place she had told him many times that she found to be her favorite place in the world. They had lived in Greece on the southern end of what had once been part of the Spartan empire before it had been overwhelmed by the mighty Roman empire. Barak had seen the rise and fall of the Persian, Athenian, and Macedonian Empires, and he knew that eventually, the Roman Empire would fall as well. Such was the way with the world. Humans felt the desire to conquer and control… and as such warred between themselves. Barak was quite happy though that Selene hadn’t been a warrior. Instead they had filled her life with adventures, sights and sounds as well as of course VERY pleasurable experiences.
” It does… it feels heavy. Do you want to go for a walk before it does?”
The nice house she lived in was peaceful and overlooked the Cape Tenaro, but to his question Selene shook her head as she rested back with her back on his chest. It was a position that was comfortable for her which was becoming more and more difficult to find these days.
“ No… for today… I would like you to use some of your magic… and make this day the best you can.”
Barak somewhat tilted his head to the side as he looked curiously to her. Selene had not asked him to use his abilities or magic as she called it in a long time… and yet as he looked to her he came to a sudden and deeply sorrowful realization as he seemed to look inside her. She herself seemed to understand the end was here as well, so he but nodded quietly to her as he replied.
” Your wish… is my command.”
Taking but a moment, Barak’s eyes glowed an unearthly blue iridescent color before she was physically returned to her youthful form. Beautiful as the day that she had opened his box, she was soon being pleasured beyond what a human would be able to ‘do’ to her.
When the day was over however she demanded he return her to her actual form and though saddened that she would not allow him to save her, her wish was his command. Scooping Selene up into his arms he gently carried her inside as the first crack of thunder broke the quietness of the day and he could hear the rain begin to fall upon the room of their… or rather her home. Setting her quietly into bed, he was going to pull away when she reached out and took hold of his hand… pulling him back to the side of the bed.
“ Stay with me… until the end.”
Barak nodded gently to her and a simple chair slid across the floor without him ever having leaving her side. Sitting down Selene smiled to him as she was breathing more heavily now.
“ Tell me again… the story of your past.”
Barak smirked ever so slightly even as he knew within himself that she wouldn’t last through the entirety of it, but he gently began to talk to her… telling her tales of Egyptian Pharoh’s, amazing people and different ages. It wasn’t long until Selene’s breathing became more normal and he knew that she was asleep. Yet even then he didn’t leave her. Instead he quietly rose to his feet and leaning over the bed, he placed the softest of kisses onto her forehead.
” Goodbye master.”
It wasn’t right then, although that would have been ironic that she did pass, nor did it escape Barak’s attention that she had taken out the box. The box was a puzzle. On each of the six sides were different glyph's and patterns that had to be solved individually. When completed it became whole and released the Djinn from his home. He wasn’t really a prisoner per se… at least other than having to see his masters each succumb to age and dying.
Instead Barak sat back down and held her hand, feeling the warmth, the softness… and eventually he could feel the ever so slight relaxation of her hand, even as her breathing came slowly and steadily to a halt. A single tear formed at the corner of his eye and did fall as he felt the pull begin. Firstly his legs disappeared into a small vortex of smoke which spun and connected back to the box. Secondarily the ‘normal’ human guise that Barak had adorned for Selene faded away. Dirty blonde hair turned silvery white with a sheen, some tattoos of varying design appeared on his upper arms, however the golden wrist bracers appearing on his wrists told him time was up.
Well… back into the box…
He wasn’t sad about things… truth be told the time he had spent with Selene had been one of the better experiences he had with humans… but as he was pulled from the chair and his vision went black his thoughts were really just left wondering what was next? Once the smoke dissipated from view, the house was quiet and things were as they were. It was about a week later that one of the merchants who normally dealt with Selene and her helper had come around and knowing that the woman had been having troubles recently the man had gone to check on her.
Finding her dead and the younger helper man who he had learned was always with her gone, the merchant spied the box which was very ornately carved and figuring he could fetch a pretty price for it, it was then passed from person to person as time and space passed in the real world. It wasn’t tied to anyone really important so it didn’t end up in a museum or really anywhere at all. Instead it had ended up in the hands of many different people. A few over the decades and centuries had tried to solve the puzzle but unless they were the right kind of soul they eventually gave up on the challenge and as thus he slept on. The time would eventually come when he would be released again, but for now, that time seemed to have not have arrived.
