The wars had come, cities were leveled. Millions died fighting for something they knew they couldnt win at. Those that survived banded together in makeshift camps, leaning on each other for support. Most were women and children, some were seasoned soldiers that had returned from the wars to a desolate future. Camps had been formed across the globe, most were focused on suvival while others were groups of rogues and thieves.
This night found a group of survivors huddled together around a small campfire,a small pot simmered above the flames. The meager meal that simmered was all they had left to feed a group of over 20 mouths. A small female stirred the pot occasionally, the green eyes that looked around her were filled with emotions one her age should never have to endure. Her shoulder length black hair was pulled back into a tie,her body concealed by the ragged clothes she wore for warmth. She was around 5 foot 5,her figure obscured by the clothes.
She rubbed her hands over the small fire trying to heat them up against the winter winds. Snow would fall soon and like last year she would watch many die from the harshness of the elements. She still had not erased the image of the small children who had succumbed to the winter of season past. Their pitiful weak cries carried across the wind to still haunt her sleep. Sleep that was seldom fully, nightmares chasing what little she got away. She appeared older than her 25 years and the smile that once graced her lips had long since fled. She had watched her family die, either by the bombs or exposure.
Her head lifted as the small voice called out to her from a pallet next to the fire. " Angel...Will the sun come out tomorrow?"came the small voice of the child looking up at her. Angelique tried to give a reassuring smile to the girl as she herself felt the weight of desperation. Most had shortened her name to Angel, why she didnt know. She didnt feel like an angel..she felt helpless most times. She had no skills other than cooking and tending to the children as the few men they had went out looking for food and water. They had given up on finding any type of buildings for shelter, the building they did find housed the thieves and other lawless people.
She lifted the small pot from the flames and measured out the food,in her own bowl she gave herself much less and more into the childs bowl. Setting the pot to the side as the others took theirs to eat she knelt next to the child and handed the bowl to her. "Eat and tomorrow will look much brighter when you wake up."She told the child as she herself tried to believe her own words. She eat her food as she sat next to the child, feeling the smallg irl move closer to her for heat and comfort. She jumped when the cry of pain filled the campsite, her head turned to the bedroll off to the side.
Mallory Jenkins lay there the throes of early labor upon her,Angel kissed the small girl as she stood and rushed to her friends side. The baby was coming and she had no clue as to what to do. mallory screamed in pain as one of the older women moved quickly to slide a piece of wood between her teeth. The screams would draw others to them if they werent careful. Angel wiped the womans forehead as she struggled thtough her delivery, panting and gasping as her daughter came into the world crying fitfully. Angel wrapped the newborn in her only blanket and then smiled as the child looked up at her. "Shes beautiful,Mal."She said softly turning to show her friend her new daughter.
Angel felt the scream threatening to rip from her throat as she looked down into the unseeing eyes of her friend. Her friend lay there, silent as death took her. She never got the chance to see her child nor hear the first cries. Hunger, sickness and no will had finally claimed her last connection with her old life. Angel dropped down beside her lifeless friend, tears ran down her cheeks as she reached out one hand to touch the cold cheek. "Mal...you have a beautiful daughter..."Angel said between her grief and sobs. "I will make sure she never gets hurt. I will raise her as my own."She promised her silent friend as she slid her eyelids closed one final time.
Angel sat there next to her friend until long into the night, the last bit of milk they had found from a stray goat used to feed the baby. She knew she would have to leave and try to find somewhere safe for her and the babe soon. Another mouth to feed would add to this groups hardships. She looked down at the now sleeping child, lashes fanned out over the small cherub cheeks. Angel felt something swell inside her, paternal protection kicked in and she vowed silently there that she would die before she let anything happen to Hope.
She smiled as the name formed in her head," I am naming you Hope Mallory Jenkins."She said softly touching the tiny hand that moved. She held the child close to her through the night and at first light she gathered what few things she had in a backpack and walked away from the camp toward an unknown fate ahead of her and Hope.

Eighteen years later..
Time had healed most parts of the world, small cities were reborn. More primitive than civilized. There was still no running water, electricity. Things seemed to have progressed back into the days of the wild frontier. Cabins sprung up as the trees once more grew. Families thrived as they plowed fields and raised cattle. Hope stood on the step of her familiy home, her deep brown eyes looking out over the dew covered grass. Her 5 foot 6 frame was trim and strong with years of learning to survive. Her waist length brown hair was braided down her back, her gloved hands twisting in front of her. The noises from the cabin still filled her ears, her mother was dying and she couldnt do anything about it.
Most medicines were only for the rich and powerful people across the mountains. Her mother had never married after she was born and taught her to rely on her own gifts instead of what others could offer. Now she was helpless as her mother lie dying. She turned and wlaked back into the cabin as she saw Ian approached. Ian had been her best friend and confidant for as long as she could recall, even though he was several years older than she was. She walked silently back into the house and knelt down beside her mothers bedside. The older woman turned her head and gave Hope a small smile, reachign out to take her hand.
"Hope..." She began talking quietly between coughs. " My time is just about over, but there are things oyu should know. Things I should have told you years ago. " Angel said as she gasped for breath, then continued. " You are the most amazing daughter anyone could ask for...your mama would have been proud of you." Angel spoke as she seemed to look off into nothing as she let her words sink into Hopes head.
" I was your mamas best friend..the night you were born she lost her life to see you came into this world strong and safe. I vowed to her I would raise you as my own..and I did." She coughed and the small amount of blood painted her lips. she seemed to speak quicker as if she knew her time was almost up. "I have raised you, loved you like my own. In a way you are my own...You are destined for much more than this life. I have seen the way you touch the animals,as if you are talking silently to them."She said as she turned her dull eyes to Hope. "Never stray from the path before you no matter what..know..that..I love you..always." Angel took a deep gasping breath as her hand tightened around Hopes then went limp.
Hope felt the tears streaming from her eyes, her brain trying to work out the words her mother had just told her. Not her real mother? she shook as she felt Ians hand on her shoulder trying to comfort her in her loss. "It..it cant be..."She sobbed turning into his arms and crying as if part of her had also died this day. Ian tried to comfort Hope as she sobbed out her grief,he knew the truth had known for a long time but had been sworn to secrecy by Angel. Now he felt as if he too had done something he couldnt fix to Hope.
Hope pulled from ians arms and rushed from the cabin out into the new forest next to her home. She ran headlong into there masses as her grief threatened to swell her up. Her cries escaped her lips as she ran,ran until she couldnt run no more. She dropped to the forest floor and curled up into a tight ball, her sobs now gone but the tears still fell. She didnt know how long she had lain there until a shadow fell voer her. She looked up and squinted in the sunlight that shadowed the form over her.
She scooted to her bottom and pushed backwards as the form knelt down in front of her. She could finally see the man that crouched there. He was dressed in a simple lion cloth, his hair hung to his middle back and black as the night sky. It was his eyes that caught her attention...eyes so blue they seemed to swirl. Kneeling before her she could tell he was taller than almost any man she had seen..he probably stood over 6 foot 5 when he stood and his bodt was lithe and lean but muscled just right. He just looked at her before his hand moved to touch her tear stained cheeks.
