A double standard perchance?

I did not mean to imply that teachers should have the right to spend class time yammering away on the phone while their class is unattended. Of course not.

Anyone who has ever taught knows what folly that thought is anyway. What group of children would supervise themselves long enough to allow the teacher to spend time on the phone?

What I was attempting to communicate was that people in many professions are allowed to have phones with them. They are able, if necessary, to access said phones for personal reasons.

But anyone in ANY field would be disciplined for using their phones to excess. Why the negative focus on teachers?

I think it has come up because kids and parents are kicking up such a stink about the kids not being allowed to have their phones with them during the day. My school says they have to stay in the lockers during school time. The kids and some parents are using it as a reason to say the kids should have them with them. I have actually seen parents on news shows saying they should be able to reach their kids while the kids are in class anytime they need to via cell phones.

No one is that important.

When I do performances - music, drama- I joke with the audience about their self-importance and about turning off cell phones (or at least putting them on vibrate).

I have said before - "Unless you're the president or your wife is in labor, you probably can do without your cell phone for the next hour and a half. And if you cannot survive without your cell phone for that long, you probably shouldn't even be here."

It brings chuckles when said with a smile. If it pisses someone off, I don't care.

What I do have at performances now is if a phone does go off (which is rare) the group of audience members surrounding the offender turn and glare and tell them to turn it off.

They get it.

Not so much a negative against teachers, but cell phone user in general. The thread was about cell phone use in school and you defended the teacher's right to have their cell. What makes them different from the students? Who is going to call them in class that they have to have their cell phone on? It's not just teachers, it's everyone. I see people every day doing the dumbest damned things I've ever seen in a car and clueless to the fact they almost killed someone because they were talking to somebody on the phone. It is irresponsible. When they do find themselves in a wreck they will vehemently deny it was their fault. Irresponsible.

There are techs I work with that take 3 hours to do a simple phone reconnect job. (it should take about 45 minutes) The reason it takes so long is that they spend an hour and a half talking to their friends about what they're going to do this weekend, their SO about what they're having for dinner or who's picking up the beer on their way home, etc. Then they complain because they don't make as much money as other techs. (we get paid by the job not hourly) The reason is the other techs do their job and don't waste time on the phone.

My first day on this job, my girlfriend called me and wanted to know what I was doing. Is that really that important? You couldn't wait til I got home and ask me how my first day was? You absolutely had to call me when I'm working in someone's home to ask me what I'm doing? I'm fucking working, I'll talk to you later. Then she's pissed at me because I wouldn't talk to her.

People these days cannot take responsibility for their own actions. That is because they have all their lives been given the tools and all the excuses they need to be irresponsible with no consequences. When consequences do hit home they cry that they are being oppressed and their rights are being trampled. Then all the other irresponsible shits say, "Yeah, you're trampling his rights, leave him alone." Then he feels vindicated in his irresponsibility.

I have to carry a cell phone at work, it's required, it's how I get my jobs scheduled, how I get equipment turned on, and a dozen other things that pertain to my job. I wish I didn't have to carry the damned thing because it always rings when I'm not in a position to talk.

I have nothing against teachers, but cell phones have no place in the classroom for students or teachers. Do you not find it ironic that we give our children pocket video games and i-pods and cellphones to take to school with them then complain because our education system is failing? Or are we going to deny responsibility for that too? Let's just blame it all on Bush.

I still say that children and adults should be treated differently. Adults should be expected to do their jobs or else lose their jobs and children shouldn't even be placed in that type of situation. Their electronic equipment shouldn't be allowed at school in the first place.

And Bush? Why bring him up? He isn't intelligent enough to comprehend this issue.

*Snicker* You whacky Lefty, you. :rose:

I always have my cell with me. I use it for little things and very important ones. My work schedule is incredibly complicated, so no one knows when they can reach me. If I'm busy, I don't answer (they can leave a message if it's important). However, if I look at the number and see it's my ex, I always answer...just in case there's a problem with my child. I also get job offers for my business at all hours of the day/night, every day of the week.

I understand the frustration with people and their cell phone use, but that doesn't mean everyone is irresponsible with them. If teachers want to have them in case of a family emergency or whatever, that's their business. If they take a call while they're supposed to be doing their job, they should be fired. But parents and especially students have no business saying, "If I can't have one, why should they get to..." The fact is, Liar's history aside, kids are incredibly irresponsible with them. There is no reason for them to have one at school, and no excuse for them bringing one to class. It's a completely seperate discussion.
