How about we offer every illegal alien in this country this deal.

You want to be legal? You want citizenship? Here's what I'm offering, you have to serve in the war effort, either abroad in the military or here at home in factories and such. Prove to me you want to be a part of this GREAT country and I will grant you citizenship...

How about it? Now I ain't talking free nor slave labor. Let them earn what we do for this service, but let them earn citizenship.

Quit Smoking!
Anyone who meets the legal criteria has something to offer. Just like Timothy McVey or Bill Gates.

It's a free country. That's hard to work with I know.

great idea.

What are we going to do, issue all orders in Spanish? I have a feeling the language barrier might be just a little bit of a hindrance during combat.

Lieutenant Smith: "Jose, more ammo for the machinegun, hurry up, they're about to overrun us!"

Private Gonzales: "Que?"

Ambro, I have to admit that sounded like a good idea the first 5 seconds or so after I read it. And then I thought about how most of us didn't do a thing to "earn" our citizenship. We were born to it, by the luck of the draw.

Freedom isn't "free" though- once we have it, we have to defend it.

I'd modify your idea to say that illegal aliens shouldn't be excluded from serving this country if they WANT to.

I don't even know this, and I should. Do you have to be a U.S. citizen to join our military? Should it be a requirement, assuming that it is?

Ambro -

That's like what the United States did to African Americans during WWII and Vietnam. It's just sick.

I don't really follow that analogy. African-Americans were drafted during WWII, and were kept out of combat and given the more menial jobs, but that simply reflected what was going on in the rest of the country. No one today is suggesting (as Ambro is) that illegal aliens need to volunteer and possibly die to gain citizenship to the U.S.

And I don't see the similarity to Viet Nam at all. Blacks in Viet Nam were entitled to everything that white soldiers were. In practice there was racism, but in general the military has always been more progressive than society in general at dealing with racism.

In the military you can be punished for making racist remarks. Not so in the civilian world.

Ok, here's the deal, they want to be part of this country, otherwise they WOULD NOT BE HERE. Whether economics or politics, it makes no difference, they want to be here. Who wouldn't? We have the most perfect nation in the world. Let them serve. Let them show their desire to be here then give them blanket citizenship.

And have you all not read into what is being said what I have? We need to prepare for war. It is coming. It is coming soon. It will be long, drawn out, and further American citizens will be taken.

Get real, freedom is not free, it is paid for by blood. Cheyenne, I love you... Lots.

Ambro, you should take your big, old ass down to your local recruiting station, tell the Army guy there how much you love America, and you are willing to give up your Suv, your 52 inch television, and your closet full of Nike apparrell, and search for terrorists the world over. They might take you.

Take all the pot shots you want people. I am willing and ready to give ALL I have for this great country of mine. Fuck those of you who are too scared to do the same. End of topic. Either you do or you don't.

I do.

Ambro, as someone else said, its a good idea for the first 5 seconds. Yes, if one wants to join the military and they aren't a US national, they are, or at least, were allowed to. Plenty of non-citizens fought as US soldiers in the Civil, Spanish American, WWI, and WWII. Also, there is a precedent for what you are suggesting, though its a bad one. After WWI, November 6, 1919, Indians (now known as Native-Americans) were granted citizenship if wanted it and had fought in the war. Mind you, a sizable chunk had already been made citizens through the Dawes Act of 1887 and the Indian Territory Act of 1901 which amended Dawes. Sorry Ambro, if they want to join up great, if not, I don't see why they can't go about gaining citizenship without fighting.

I've already seen Arab-Americans have their windows smashed, run out of their businesses, and attacked. Please, don't add to the panic and hysteria.

You do what?

The US Military doesn't need you, it can obliterate large amounts of people with a push of a button, remember Desert Storm? Remember how the media told you what a formidable force Sadamm's "Republican Guard" was in the six months leading up to it? Remember the bloodbath we were in for? Yeah, right.

Eat your Doritos, there's good TV on tonight.

What nationality are your ancestors Amby? What generation descendant are you?

You have to be a U.S. citizen to join all branches of the U.S. military except the Marines, they are the only ones to accept foreign recruits.

Okay, so it generally IS a requirement that you be an American citizen before you can join the military.

But SHOULD it be? Maybe PC's requirement that they speak English is more important than citizenship?

Has everyone overlooked the fact that Ambro said "Illegal Aliens"?

That means they are in this country Illegally. They are here in our country because they hope to find something better than they had in the country they came from. Without a change in their status, they can not become a citizen of this country.

While I'm not sure I want just anyone serving in our military, I think ambro may be onto something. These people believe strongly enough that they have a chance at a better life here to sneak into this country, hide out and take the most menial jobs that none of us wants. Offering them a way to become citizens that benifits both the US and them doesn't seem out of line to me.

But, then, that is just one mans opinion.

Why? Why is it so important for people who move here to speak English? And this is definitely not aimed toward anyone, especially not you Chey, but a general question that popped into my head.

Why do people get so incredibly angry at non-english speaking Americans? Does it really cramp your lifestyle to see things in Spanish? Is it taking away from your way of life for a street sign to be in Spanish? There are parts of Rochester where the street names are labelled in Spanish. Many signs around there are in Spanish and in English. Nobody asked for them, and they've been like that for awhile. It doesn't bother me. It doesn't irk me. My life is unaffected in every way by them being that way.

Just because they want a better life, and they move to America to do so does that mean that they should be forced into learning English? And I'm talking about citizens too here. The same thing happened when my family came over here from Sicily and Italy to make a better life for themselves. They were shunned and made to feel like shit because they barely spoke a lick of English.

I'm the third generation from the immigrants who came here. And guess what. I don't know ANY Italian at all. My family had it drilled into their heads for so long that they weren't good enough because they held onto their language that they finally refused to speak it. They didn't pass it down through the generations for fear that they would only be accepted if they became 100% Americanized.

I would have loved to be able to have grown up speaking Italian with my family alongside English. I would have loved to grow up with more of that part of my culture than I have. And sadly, the tiny bit of Italian I DO Understand is from the spanish that I've learned.

As for my Irish heritage, I know NOTHING at all. NOTHING. Because they too threw it away for acceptance into America.

And on a side note, I've found that most of the Asian and Arabian immigrants in the city of Rochester have not only made the effort to be completely fluent in English, but Spanish and in some cases Italian and French as well. Hell most people are raised in their OWN country to speak English as well as their own language.

What efforts do we make?

Angel, if you went to live in France and become a citizen, you would have to learn to speak French. If you went to live in any other country and be granted citizenship, you would have to learn the language. People who come to this country should have to speak English- simple as that. It is our national language and we shouldn't have to spend our tax money making everything bilingual for those lazy asses who choose not to learn they language of the country in which they are living.

We all know that if we went to a foreign country and didn't know any of the language, there would be no way we could get a job. But in the U.S. people come over here with no English-speaking skills and they know they can find at least a low-paying, menial one. They can live in this country their entire life and never even learn how to speak English, yet they'll be treated as citizens. It's completely disrespectful, not to mention costly.
