A DDoS attack of 50 gigabits per second

"If you aimed this at Downing Street they would be down instantly."
"They would be completely off the internet."
"These attacks are peaking at 300 gb/s (gigabits per second).

- Steve Linford, chief executive for Spamhaus

"Normally when there are attacks against major banks, we're talking about 50 gb/s."

"Web sites said to be sending spam has escalated into one of the largest computer attacks on the Internet,
causing widespread congestion and jamming crucial infrastructure around the world."

"An engineer at one of the largest Internet communications firms said the attacks in recent days have been as many
as five times larger than what was seen recently in attacks against major American banks."

Le Jerque and his doublewideband internet service has struck again.

And now, for a completely different opinion-

"Since Spamhaus is a point of reference for many providers, everything around the world of email and communications
has slowed down which in turn slows down other aspects of the Web."

"It makes sense—except for the lack of any evidence."

Could WikiLeaks, Not Spamhaus, Be the Target of Cyber Attacks?

"I tried to access Cyberbunker's site but it took forever to load. It finally cropped up with some ominous logo
and a picture of WikiLeaks' Julian Assange. Ohhh. So this is where the sneaky site is hosted. Funny how
that isn't mentioned in any of the reports.
{gsg- the underlining is mine.)

"Assange's various stinks with large government organizations, including the United States,
changes the story drastically if you ask me."

"Meanwhile, Spamhaus.org loaded as fast as if it were on my local network."

{gsgs comment- Most of the reports I see mention this has been going on, for the past week}

"....we deal with large DDoS attacks every day. Usually, these attacks are directed at large companies or organizations
that are reluctant to talk about their details. It's fun, therefore, whenever we have a customer that is willing to let us tell
the story of an attack they saw and how we mitigated it. This is one of those stories."

Spamhaus

Yesterday, Tuesday, March 19, 2013, CloudFlare was contacted by the non-profit anti-spam organization Spamhaus.

They were suffering a large DDoS attack against their website and asked if we could help mitigate the attack.

Where: Kloetinge, Southern Netherlands

Who: Cyberbunker

Among the world's strangest locations for a data centre are the ones found underground in former nuclear bunkers.
Built at the height of Cold War paranoia in the mid 1950s, the aptly named Cyberbunker purchased the underground
complex in 1998, turning it into a battle hardened data server that specialises in web hosting and secure data storage.

Designed to house up to 72 people from a nuclear attack and for counter espionage, the facility was later used
(and redesigned) as part of the ASCORN early-warning system in the 1970s to monitor early missile strikes from the
Soviet Union. In 1996, NATO decommissioned the bunker.

Bahnhof had previously hosted WikiLeaks, but the website abandoned the company in favor of Amazon
when its computers had been attacked.

The Swedish Bahnhof ISP is also built in a former nuclear bunker.

Political pressure forced WikiLeaks to return to its original Swedish host, Bahnhof AB, which it had abandoned
in favor of Amazon after saying that its computers had been attacked.

{gsgs comment- many of the newsfeeds that I have been looking at, mention that wikileaks is hosted at Cyberbunker.}

Who was attacking wikileaks ?

December 7, 2010

PRQ, a Swedish-based internet service provider which specializes in hosting controversial sites, admitted today that its servers
were running slowly after what it suspected was a cyber attack. Wikileaks has been forced to shunt its sites around different
servers to avoid the ongoing cyber assaults.
