Last Saturday, I inadvertently commited myself to about 8 hours of babysitting my youngest Granddaughter -- age four -- by giving her older sister (Age Eight) tickets to Prokiev's "Cinderella" as performed by The Tchaikovski Perm Ballet Company (see attached Picture) for her birthday.
My afternoon started with a trip to the park, and following a four-year-old around the full length of a one mile walking track, pushing her ina swing for twenty minutes, trying to teach her to cross the horzontal ladder, catching for ten or twelve trips down various slides, before choosing someplace to go for dinner.
The four-year-old's choice for dinner? Applebee's Bar and Grill -- apparently they have the best Macaroni & Cheese with Garlic toast in town.
Of course it's rush hour and the waitress is going crazy trying to keep up, so the service isn't the best possible, but overall, a very nice dinner with a very polite granddaughter. (Aside from the fact she's incapable of not giving a running commentary to anyone who shows the slightest interest while waiting and/or eating.
After dinner, home (to her house) for popcorn and a movie. In short order, the choices are narrowed down to "The Lizard of OZ" and "E.T. The Extra-Cholesterol" -- by prior arrangement with Mom, we watched E.T. (An original release version on VHS.)
The Granddaughter lasted about 40 minutes into the movie before falling asleep for the night -- 40 minutes of non-stop questions.
All-in-all, a very enjoyable afternoon and evening with a small creature who has about twenty times as much energy as I do.
(BTW, The older Granddaughter (and Mom) throughly enjoyed the ballet.)
