I have a few questions:

1. What is the proper way to write out "turn on?" As in, "that's not a turn on." Is it two words, "turn on", or one hyphenated word, "turn-on"?

2. What is the proper way to refer to a time? Two a.m., Two AM, or something else?

3. Best way to write out "two hundred fifty pounds." Any hyphens in there? Numbers instead of words?

Thanks in advance.

Turn on used as a noun should be turn-on As in it was a huge turn-on.

No but there would be in two hundred fifty-one.

I always spell them out unless it is cumbersome. One wouldn't type twenty-four thousand five hundred and fifty-seven, not in fiction anyway. Also I find it awkward to use the numeral 1 instead of one.

Here's another one: mens room.

Is it Men's Room, Men's room, men's room, Mens room, Mens room, or mens room?

That's such a good question that it's answered in Websters, which normally doesn't list such combinations: men's room.

Also: women's room/ladies' room (in case you wondered).

The numbers question gets into which system you are going to use, Chicago Manual of Style (mostly written out, but with exceptions) or APA style (Arabic numbers above nine). Either is fine, CMS is more for the type of fiction written here; just be consistent with the style choice.

Thank you. Back to editing.
