Probably all of the contests and at least half of the challenges, I reckon, depending on how much time I will have to spare. Most looking forward to the Geek Pride, Pandemonium, and Halloween - though Crime and Punishment was surprisingly fun last year as it really made me sit down and write something I otherwise never would have. Might give a classic Noir-type story a try this year. Time will tell.

I'm already pressing on with the Pandaemonium challenge (I have the idea, and the time right now: I reckon I need to have a first draft finished by February to have any meaningful chance to submit something), and I have the idea for Amorous Goods (which will likely be the summer project). I might look at something for the Winter Holidays Contest, but I don't have much time, particularly in the autumn and spring, so unless I find time to work on something either now or in the summer, it's unlikely to happen.

Thanks for this. Trying to plan out my year. Honestly in the perspective of trying to write for these competitions it feels like the year is so short lol

Crime and Pun. Sept 2nd Sept 20th Challenge

This one sounds much more intriguing than the original.

Cuntry Crimes? Slash & Blow themes? Murder at the Merk Inn? Bodice Zippers?

There's the Mickey Spillane thingy, too.

I've got one ready for the 750 challenge, and I'll at least plan to finish up my abortive attempt at last year's winter/holiday one to use this year. Other than that, several of these appeal to me and seem fun, but until I have a work in progress it's hard to know what I'll get into.

I’m letting each event inspire me but not necessarily committing to their posting schedule and other requirements. Sorry if that disappoints. My Pink Orchid inspired lesbian orgy story is in pending limbo here at the moment. [fingers crossed] As for other events, I’m not a big fan of spoilers and ideas may change before release, so just wait and see, okay? ;)

I'll say it: I think there are too many.

I used to enjoy writing for all the contests and most of the events. Now there's no way for me to do so, which is too bad. Writing to those prompts, many of which I'd never have thought about, helped me develop my writing.

Before, you had to stretch yourself in writing the kind of piece you'd not normally try. Now, it's the opposite: there are so many niche events that there's less of an incentive to challenge yourself, leading to ruts. I think that's unfortunate, though I appreciate that there are probably many who disagree with me. And that's fine.

Thanks for putting the list together.
Working on a Valentines Day story, but that's as far as I will commit.

I'll enter the regular site contest. I'm working a 750-word one in my mind now, except that it also would go for Valentine's Day (not to win, of course, because length will preclude it being taken seriously at Lit.). I've got one for Crime and Punishment too. I may drop a Hardesty series one in Micky Spillane too. Who knows? As contests approach I tend to come up with an entry or two.

Oh, and thanks for compiling the list.

I'm inclined to agree. Although I suspect we might have reached a peak year.

My personal feeling is that Amorous Goods might have reached a natural end point - there weren't many stories last year, and even though I enjoyed writing one of them, and I have an idea for another this year, I suspect that other challenges might be more attractive.

All the Mickey Spillane stories I've read so far could have been submitted to Crime and Punishment.

Yes, when Crime and Punishment was initially floated, that concern was raised within about forty seconds of the announcement. People talked about it on the threads, but both went forward.

As this thread shows, there seems to be a reluctance to say "NO!" to these things. Again, many see that as a positive; they might be right, though I tend to disagree with them.

OK, a 750-word story now written. But, as it is gay romance, I think I'll throw it into the contest rather than wait for the 750-word exercise, which is only that--a writing exercise. I'll include a proslug noting it's written to the 750-word exercise wordage limit, though.

I think that's the right call. I see C&P as a generalization of MS. I'd rather fold MS into C&P now that C&P exists. (Says this random person on the internet who has no say over either challenge.)

I don't do MS because I've never read Spillane, but one has to wonder: if we've got an event aping the style of Spillane, then why not Faulkneresque erotica? Fuckscenes written in the manner of Mary Shelley or Charles Dickens? A Tolkien event, with frequent use of the verb "to be" and a lot of attention paid to matters botanical? If one is approved, why not all? It's unmanageable after awhile. I think, in general, it might be best to run some of these every two or three years, rather than annually.

I'm all in favor of crime-themed literature in general, and the C&P event was a lot of fun to write for.

I think it's just about whether the organizing author chooses to continue to run their particular challenge. If a challenge generates very little interest, I assume an author would then likely consider discontinuing it. That is certainly the approach I would take with the challenge I have just instigated: if nobody wants to get involved, that'll be the end of it. With regards to the site moderator(s), their greenlighting of challenges may just be down to the fact that they appreciate people engaging with the site by organizing these challenges. The diversity of challenge subjects means there's something for everyone (or nearly everybody)...you can just pick and choose what you like, and the challenges will likely live and die by the amount of interest they stir up. Who knows? There might be a horde of authors out there who would love the opportunity to pen some Charles Dickens-inspired porn! You could call it The Charles Suck My Dick(ens) Challenge! Suck it and see...it might be a huge success!

All the Mickey Spillane stories I've read so far could have been submitted to Crime and Punishment.
Except Crime and Punishment by its name conjures up Dostoevskian angst and high drama, whereas Mickey Spillane conjures up something completely different.

"Noir ain't angst," said the dame in the tight red dress, cigarette smoke drifting up from her lips. "Anyway, all you got in Siberia is snow. A girl would freeze her tits off up there."

I need to put this in a calendar...

I've committed to the Pink Orchid, and probably Sports but everything else is going to be reliant on my imagination behaving itself.

Or misbehaving. 😋
