Sylvia
Vince and I were outside on the long wooden deck with the grill going, the flower boxes along the deck blooming with tons of fragrant flowers. The early evening breeze was just soft enough to enhance the beautiful clear night it was leading up to, not a cloud in the sky and looking to be a perfect night for stargazing. Jack and Hiram were sitting at the patio table drinking beers and playing a game of gin rummy, while Eric was sprawled out under the old oak tree, pencil and sketch book in hand. Naomi and Karen were in the kitchen preparing salad and other things to go with the burgers we were cooking on the barbeque.
Not only did I feel so safe and comforted when Vince came up behind me, hugging me to him, always seeming to know what I needed when I needed it, I also was starting to have warm fuzzy tingling feelings all over the more I was with him. And although these feelings were very sexual, they were also very different from those I felt with anyone in my life. Having had lots of relationships but never really been in love before, I was beginning to believe I was in love with Vince and maybe, just maybe he was falling in love with me as well.
“What you think about baby?” he whispered softly against my neck, noticing the smile that started forming on my lips.
“Oh nothin much…” I replied, covering his arms that were wrapped tightly around my waist with my own, drawing him closer to me. I cocked my head offering up my delicate mouth to him with a warm glow shining in my eyes. “maybe just how happy I am that you’re here with me.”
“I am too Sylvia,” he said and bent his head bringing his lips to mine in a soft sweet kiss. “Maybe too happy…” he added letting his words trail.
“Too happy?” I asked looking at him with questioning eyes, confused somewhat. I was guessing by the look in his eyes he it had to do with what was going on and the threats on my life and how that was affecting both of us. Wishing more than anything I could ease his doubts along with my own and wanting to keep the seriousness of the situation at a distance for now, I wiggled my fanny against the front of his kaki slacks, adding with a giggle, “maybe a bit frisky too?”
“Sylvia…”
He started to say something and by the serious tone in his voice, I quickly turned around in his arms, looping my arms around his neck.
“Vince, I trust you. I know you won’t let anything bad happen to me if you can stop it. Now why don’t you just ssshhhhh those thoughts and believe that yourself. Quit worrying so much.”
We shared a long deep french kiss that always ignited those passionate sparks that seemed to have been felt from our very first kiss.
“Uhhhh…excuse me, but is it dinner yet?” Naomi asked with a deep chuckle coming out on the deck and picked up the spatula, flipping the burgers over.
“Almost dinner, but its desert I’m looking forward to,” I giggled, winking at Vince who actually seemed to blush.
“I can’t imagine what that would be,” she laughed, then turned looking over at Eric, almost studying him before she continued speaking. “Well, just wanted you to know, we’re all pretty hungry and everything else is ready. How about we eat out here, it’s a beautiful night.”
“Great, why don’t you girls go bring out the food and I’ll finish these burgers, although I am surprised we aren’t having steak.” Vince said and I had to laugh at his reference with all the wealth that seemed to be floating around.
I followed Naomi inside but not without whispering something to Vince, making him smile but quickly had him turning from us, busy wanting to get everyone fed.
“You and loverboy sure seem to be getting along pretty well,” Naomi stated flatly, which surprised me, but shouldn’t have, knowing how she felt about people not as well off as we had been.
“What’s wrong sis? Afraid I might have found someone real, honest and who might actually like me just for me?” I replied lightly, trying to hold back the deep sarcasm I would have liked to add, specially with Karen there.
“Of course not Sylvia, you know she only wants what’s best for you. You got to admit, he’s not in your…well, just not…” Karen spoke up, always the one trying to keep the two of us from arguing, although always siding with my sister so it seemed.
“Look you two, I don’t care what either of you think of him, I happen to…” I started to saying, feeling my blood pressure rising.
“Be a lush who goes with anyone in pants, hell when you sober up does any of the matter?” Naomi spat out.
My first thought was to slap her face, but then I saw Vince out the screen door, waving, letting me know the burgers were done. That warm fuzzy tingling feeling came over me just looking at him, seeing that glow in his eyes and that smile on his face and it really didn’t matter what she thought. It wasn’t worth it to try and fight with her, she was going to believe whatever she wanted to, hell she hadn’t even noticed that I wasn’t drinking but even that didn’t matter. I picked up the tray with the plates, napkins and silverware on it, then smiled a sweet smile at her.
“Naomi, fuck you! I don’t know what you got to be jealous of anyway, seems you enjoy leftovers.” I laughed and headed for the back door.
“Bitch!” Naomi replied flatly.
“Yep, but a sober one now,” I finished, not letting her get to me and not caring what her reaction was to my comment.
I happily walked outside, setting the tray on the table and practically jumped into Vince’s arms, kissing him with a passion stronger than I had felt yet.
“Wow! What was that for can I ask?”
“Just caused I missed you and thinking about tonight, you, me and the stars…” I smiled, figuring if he hadn’t heard the conversation thru the screen door, it wasn’t all that important that he did.
