A Bragging Thread

Sometimes the viewership numbers on the stories seem too good to be true. 17,200 views on my Valentine's Day story published less than three days ago? How much of that could possibly correspond to actual humans reading and absorbing the text of the story, as opposed to people clicking the link and immediately clicking back for whatever reason, or bots scraping it for something or other? Half? A quarter? Less? I don't want to be too self-doubting, but how could that many people actually read that story in that time, and all the others posted by all the other writers?

Vote scores and favorite counts are also questionable. There's always an active thread about that. But there's no arguing with comments. I've been publishing stories here for less than 18 months and I've had over 200 comments on my stories. Over 50 of those were on one story. (Yes, it was a LW story, and yes, the plurality of them were critical, but some of that was constructive criticism rather than the infamous abuse.)

A lot of it is glib, but even so, that's an incredible amount of feedback to get for free, amateur, just-for-fun writing, and it seems reasonable to conclude it's the result of a lot of humans actually reading and thinking about my work one way or another.

I remember the feeling of the first story ('Map of Tasmania' for me). It's not so long ago for me, although for others here it will have been much, much longer. That uncertainty, the feeling that the story can't possibly be worth reading, and then have people actually like it, respond, and kindly point out things that could have been improved (Romance was a good place to start). My third story was in LW and I expected it to be torn to shreds, but objectively it's still my highest rating story based on percentile rankings. That feeling of taking risks and getting instant feedback is amazing, and regular authors in the real world don't get that.

Don't lose that feeling. Don't let yourself get too cynical, too worried about scores, number of comments, and so on. The act of creation and the engagement of readers is a reward in itself (some of my riskier more recent efforts than the first stories below have scored lower, and that's perfectly fine).

Congrats all.

Ah, that First Story feeling.

My first story is still, incredibly, one of my most popular, and my third highest viewed, coming in behind two of my incest stories.

And to me its my most poorly written story. Granted, I was new, obviously. But as amateur as it was, the response i got blew me away.

Since top lists are a popular topic as of late, I suppose I shall take this opportunity to brag about my only entry on any of the all-times:

It's on the very last page of all-time best in First Time, which seems to be the only category where you don't need 4.8+ to qualify :D

You should write in german, but be prepared to be downvoted to 4.61-6.59 as these are the only numbers allowed on the toplists there :D
