We have a new baby to try and keep alive - a baby magpie fell out of the nest this morning and was brought over by one of the cats.
I rescued it - Randall was not amused.
It is now in a shoebox nest on a high shelf and has devoured some mushed up ham and half a soggy weetbix.
Hope we can keep it alive and cat free. They can be a seriously cool pet.

If memory serves, magpies can be taught to 'speak' like ravens, parrots and mynahs.

It's not a raven, but teach it to say 'nevermore'.

Edgar Allen Poe would be proud. :)

When I was a lot younger my parents had a Magpie. They fed it Kibble of all things and it thrived for many years.

They are a fairly intelligent bird and they seem to enjoy human company when they get used to it.

Good luck.

I'm sitting here thinking "what the hell is she talking about with birds in the nest when it's fall?"

Duh.......... She's down under. ;)

Hahah.... Thats cool as heck

and by the way... the chicadees up here have a new set of nestlings that are fledging out this week.... crazy! six sets of nestlings this year alone.....sadly four of them little birdies died on my stoop falling from said nest (18 foot fall to concrete).... but kitty didnt mind at all...

So far so good. We were out for a couple of hours and came home to a ravenous baby bird. He/she (I think of it as a he for some reason) has moved about to make himself more comfortable in his shoebox and pooped twice.

I'm taking all this as very good signs that neither the fall from the nest (which is right in the top of an old pepper tree) nor the "rescue" by the cat have done him any major damage.

I'm slowly getting the cram-food-down-gullet technique right. Now I just have to do a bit of research to get the quality of tucker correct, instead of the stopgaps I'm currently using.

But I don't have a bust of Pallas...

Please dont tell me you are chewing up his food for him first, that would be a bit going too far! lmao

Good luck with the baby!!
I like the name Oscar!

That's very cool. You'll have to wake up every few hours at night to feed it. :rose: Congratulations on the newest addition.

I guess I shoulda tried that. He didn't make it through the night . Not sure if the cat did him some damage we didn't see, or if the unexpectedly cold night got him.

Bummer! :(

Sorry starrkers.

Requiescat in pace lil' birdie.
