Talked to a guy Friday night from the Rosebud Tribe in South Dakota. Never heard much of this story before so I researched most of it this morning. He was telling me how it is one of the poorest tribes in the world with sever alcohol and drug problems as well as insane teenage suicide rates. The kicker is the tribe won a lawsuit against the federal government in 1980 for 106 million. The tribal leaders refuse to take this money and the trust it was set in now has over 900 million. It seems in 1868 the government signed a treaty giving the black hills to 6 small Sioux tribes. Gold was soon discovered and of course the government stole the land back ( the root of Custer's Indian wars). The Tribal leaders want the land not the money. The tribal members are suing to force the government to disburse the money to the tribal members. He estimated there are about 15,000 tribal members.

That is not a ton of money divided by that many members but giving their financial situation it could certainly help. It could probably do better going to the tribes themselves if they used it to open a nice joint casino. I guess the question is, are the tribal leaders doing the right thing by not taking the money? I admire that they are sticking to their guns, but honestly how could they possible imagine that the government is going to give up Mt. Rushmore as well as the land around it that is still producing gold?

So what are your thoughts, should they just take the $ or insist on the land?

here's my thought, from a 'poetic justice' point of view:

they should call whoever's in charge at the Dept. of Interior, or whoever is making deals with the tribes these days. they should call and say "hey, yeah, it's us, we'll go ahead and take the land. just come meet us at our special 'conference room teepee', it's way out in the middle of nowheresville." and when the yuppie suits show up with their cheap sunglasses and their pleather shoulder bags, the indians should close the flap and trap the suits in the teepee, then light the fucker on fire, yipping and howling and riding circles around it on horseback.

Hell if they can continue to get that same rate of return they should keep it in the bank another 30.....

Take the $ or hold out for the land?

Here's the skinny.

No tribe will ever get their land back. It would be like the US giving Texas back to Mexico with a letter of apology.

Fact is, as a general consensus nobody gives a fuck about the Indians. Sad but true. They are a conquered people. Assimilate and stop being a fucking nuisance. I do not give a fuck about it is there heritage to kill a whale or any of their other bullshit. Times change. Get the fuck over yourselves redman. Get a fucking job and stop moochin off the government.

Kills me when I read the dumbasses doggin blacks regarding welfare. The Indians are worse.

What on earth makes you think that a sum of money would solve their problems? Most of these tribe members don't know how to deal with money, they don't know how to prioritize and they certainly haven't been taught to build credit.

The ideals are all wrong here. All wrong.

And you are an asshole. Holy shit. This is the worst thing I've seen you post and that's saying a lot.

Why are they not entitled to holding on to their heritage? To teach their children their ways, to preserve their language and background?

Just had to quote for the dumb natives who know nothing about money.

Ya know, I sincerely appreciate the artist's vision, effort, and result...

...but the land should be returned to the redman, and hopefully they'll Custerize that monumental tribute to two of the most extreme statists in American presidential history (I'm sure George and Tom won't mind sacrificing their own rough images for such a righteous effort, either).

Vat, I apologize for posting in your thread, this is a topic near and dear to my heart. I should have just kept on moving.

and that is why I suggested giving the $ to the members is stupid and it would be better for the tribe to take the $ and invest it into something that would pay dividends to the members while creating jobs....

Most of my clients are fortune 500 companies but I also have a few tribes on the books...... Tribe with $. There are a few tribes out there were every member receives 50-100k annually for life. Sad part is these kids grow up with $ and no drive to do more than drink and party......

You really think Indians would still be living in tepees? Get real.

Oh hey wait a sec. Leroy Jackson ancestors were head hunters in Africa before he was uprooted. Does he have the right to go around showing his kids his heritage? I mean what's a few heads to preserve his heritage right.

Post away...this is the first I heard about this tribe and it interests me. I do not know enough to have an opinion yet, so yours is appreciated. But I am not sure how you assigned a opinion to me based on what I wrote and how that opinion that was not there offended you....

I don't believe I asked if you were or not, cunt.

You're obviously one of those stupid ones you mentioned.

They are not stupid. At all. They are left alone, ignored and stolen from and no one bothers to help them with learning how to deal. Don't put words in my mouth either.

My opinion was not of you. It's tragic what happens to tribes who are given large sums of money but not given the guidance as to building it, taking care of their futures and how not to squander it. It is not an opinion based on their race but on the circumstances. If the tribe was made of poor white people, there would be a committee dedicated to helping them, teaching them and guiding them.

*hand a tissue*

They could buy a shit load of arrows and war upon the whiteman. Maybe scalp a few people. Keeping with all that heritage teaching ethic.
