Talked to a guy Friday night from the Rosebud Tribe in South Dakota. Never heard much of this story before so I researched most of it this morning. He was telling me how it is one of the poorest tribes in the world with sever alcohol and drug problems as well as insane teenage suicide rates. The kicker is the tribe won a lawsuit against the federal government in 1980 for 106 million. The tribal leaders refuse to take this money and the trust it was set in now has over 900 million. It seems in 1868 the government signed a treaty giving the black hills to 6 small Sioux tribes. Gold was soon discovered and of course the government stole the land back ( the root of Custer's Indian wars). The Tribal leaders want the land not the money. The tribal members are suing to force the government to disburse the money to the tribal members. He estimated there are about 15,000 tribal members.
That is not a ton of money divided by that many members but giving their financial situation it could certainly help. It could probably do better going to the tribes themselves if they used it to open a nice joint casino. I guess the question is, are the tribal leaders doing the right thing by not taking the money? I admire that they are sticking to their guns, but honestly how could they possible imagine that the government is going to give up Mt. Rushmore as well as the land around it that is still producing gold?
So what are your thoughts, should they just take the $ or insist on the land?
