9-11 memorial thread

I'll never forget...

because I do not frequent the political threads and because I usually do well at holding my temper, many here might think me a peaceful man. I am not. I simply won't resort to violence without being properly motivated.

I am still saddened and infuriated by what happened that day. And were I to be given the opportunity to prevent it from happening to others by violence? I wouldn't hesitate.

The problem of course, is that the men responsible are either dead by their own hands or very well hidden. So I do what I can.

I remember, and I live my life as best I can by trying not to walk in fear and by trying to hold myself to values I believe to be in opposition to theirs.

Awesome.

And truly inspirational.

nice, belegon

P: This is very important to realize. Dropping Daisy Cutters in Iraq is not necessarily effective in addressing these terrorists. One MUST NOT just lash out at CONVENIENT targets.

In some ways, the Al Qaeda have no country, though Pakistan is hiding them. Oddly Pakistan is a US ally, and there is a pledge NOT to put US soldiers in there, iirc.

The methods of waging war on floating bands of terrorists are still being learned; this is not just 'guerrillas' as in Vietnam. This is extremely 'asymmetric warfare,' to use the catchphrase of the day. It is the logical outcome of US armament and technological know how, from cluster bombs to night vision to laser guided bombs to MOAB. Odd: the nemesis of MOAB was.. boxcutters.

The tragedy is that ordinary citizens pay for the historical misdeeds of governments; actions taken long ago or far away. Just as Londoners were bombed by the IRA for the Northen Ireland situation.

OTOH, one must say that ordinary Americans, who previously could NOT locate Iraq on a map, or who didn't know who the Saudis were execution were complacently ignorant. Not that killing is the proper penalty, but if you close your eyes to the world (and its perceived grievances against the US gov)--and more importantly, the US leaders do--you are in for trouble.

Some of those responsible [ Khalid Shaikh Mohammed] it turns out, are in CIA "black" prisons, or in roving ships' brigs, being held without access of the Red Cross, and subject to 'stressful' interrogation. .... Hence another problem: Who'd have thought "A US gulag."

A man by the name of Matt sat next to me in Property Law (a year-long class, an oddity nowadays, but the very best professor in our law school insisted that he could only teach 1Ls to think if he had a full year to talk to them). We became good friends, despite that one day he returned from break and slammed a pack of Tic Tacs down on our desk in front of me without a word (and without a word I brought my own mints for the rest of the year).

Whenever some twisty rule of property that only made sense if you looked at it sideways from a few hundred years ago drove our fellow students nuts, they dropped by our desk and talked to me. Whenever the question involved finance, I just popped a Tic Tac in my mouth and elbowed Matt.

We graduated in May of 1999, cum laude for me, magna cum laude for Matt. I went to work in a white shoe law firm specializing in trusts, estates, and tax, on the top floors of a building on Madison Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

Matt went to work in a white shoe law firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions, on the top floors of the World Trade Center.

On September 11, 2001, while I had had my fill of the punishing lifestyle and work and went off to look for another career path, Matt was already on track for partner, apprenticed to a former chairman of the SEC, and came into work early like every other day.
