That's the price my daughter pays for water, by the 20oz bottle.

Starbucks four buck coffee will soon be a thing of the past....how many containers of water do you buy each day?

Wake-up call all you upwardly mobile larvae!

Amicus...

Who the fuck buys water in bottles?

Honestly...tests have shown that bottled water is pretty much exactly the same as what comes from your tap. Talk about wasting money...

Guilty.

I know it's silly, but if I don't buy it, I won't drink it. Or at least, I won't drink as much as I should.

I also buy the little bottles to put in my kid's lunch. I'd rather she has that than some sugary juice, and she won't drink milk.

I have never said anything, or raised an eyebrow at my three daughters, all of whom seem never without a bottle in purse or at hand.

One working daughter buys it by the case, but always the same brand, a popular one, I guess.

Just wondered how many others were curious.

thanks...:rose:

Down here in the Southwest, Hughes Aircraft dumped a bunch of TCE into the aquifer and then left. We had clusters of lukemia in children. Then we got water from the Central Arizona Project that rusted out the galvanized pipes in the homes built in the 50s and earlier. I had to replumb my whole house, on my own dime.

We've had investigative journalism uncovering things like the City of Tucson testing wells and getting results indicating pollution that violates safety standards, but keeping those test results secret for years until they can arrange to take those wells offline.

So when I run out of bottled water, I'll fill up an empty bottle with tap water, take a couple of sips, and then pour it out and go buy more water at the store. Our tap water tastes really foul, like it's gone bad or something. I should probably get a filter, as long as they're TCE proof.

The water I buy - Dasani - is supposed to be fortified with minerals, but since it's made by Coca-Cola, it could be even worse than the TCE water coming out of my tap.

Tap water tastes better than bottled water anyways.

Not here it don't! Our water's a chemical nightmare...and that's before it's treated. Sulphur, tannin, pesticides, fertilizer...and whatever else. It's ok to bathe in, but drink it...yuck.

Viva! Bottled water...even at $6.50 a gallon. :D

From Wiki:
Dasani had to be withdrawn in the UK due to contamination with bromate, a suspected carcinogen, produced by the treatment process used on the water.

Dasani uses tap water from local municipal water supplies, filters it using the process of reverse osmosis and adds trace amounts of minerals, including magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt), potassium chloride (a sodium-free substitute for table salt), and common salt.

ETA: From Wiki:
Aquafina uses PepsiCo's own seven-step purification system, which it calls HydRO-7, which includes charcoal filtration, reverse osmosis, and ozonation. PepsiCo states in marketing material that this system removes substances that may be in other brands of bottled water. As of July 27, 2007, PepsiCo put a disclaimer stating the water comes from a "public source" (meaning tap water) on each bottle. Aquafina uses the term "Purified Drinking Water" on its label. In Canada the current 1.5 L bottle of water displays "Demineralized Treated Water". Michelle Naughton, a Pepsi-Cola North America spokeswoman said, "If this helps clarify the fact that the water originates from public sources, then it's a reasonable thing to do."

I can count on Two hands the number of bottles of water I've drank in my life, when there was nothing else available, never did like Perrier. I carry my own mug around with me, been doing it for 20 years now, so I seldom use disposable cups either.

If I buy filtered water I use a 5 gallon container that I fill myself, or buy gallon jugs.

I drink coffee in the morning, Tea in the afternoon, just like the song.

I also buy distilled water to make tea. :D Forgot about that. Tea made with our tap water looks like mud and tastes terrible.

Amicus, I'm another one who generally has a bottle close at hand. I guess it's become habit.

The groundwater up in Northern Montana where my grandparents lived had so much sulpher in it it was shade of pastel yellow, and stank. It is, however, a natural fungicide.

The groundwater in Central California is pretty heavily contaminated with Selenium from irrigation runoff. Here it's mostly Mercury.

Heavy metals are more of a concern to me than anything else, most commercial filters will remove them - I'm looking at an under the counter one now, since the faucet mount won't fit my new faucet.

Imagine long arduous sighs....I am not going to make this any more political than was in the original post.

But for those that raised their eyebrows at some of the posts, relieve your worries and visit your local municipal source of purified water.

The process of purification is standardized across the US at least and delivers uncontaminated pure drinking water.

Four and a half bucks for a 20-pack of 20-oz. bottles from my local HEB. ;)

That's what, 22 and a half cents a bottle?

That's me being upwardly mobile. ;)

More like a gradual sideways slide . . . .

When I was living in the Mediterranean, water was more expensive than wine (and the only potable water came in bottles). Best excuse we ever had for drinking what we really wanted to drink anyway.

They've had it right for a few thousand years, now. ;)

I refer you to my earlier post, which can be verified with the google button. Of course, the government isn't going to admit there was TCE in the water, so you'd have to abandon your world of absolutes and weigh the evidence.

Indeed.

I drink the local water sometimes, but I know there's crap in it that water doesn't normally possess. I can tell by the taste. We don't give the little one tap water; we give her the stuff from the bottle, and if it was five bucks per 20-oz container, we'd still do it.

There are some places in the country which still use well water versus city-standardized "purified" water. I'll take a canned soda, thank you. ;)

So many kids only drink bottle water today, and it’s a boom for dentist. I’m not sure if any bottle water companies put fluoride into the water more kids are having cavities. One of my cousins who never had a cavity till he stopped drinking tap and started to only drink bottled water. Well at age 25 he is enjoying three cavities.

Bottled water has its utility. It stores well and travels well. But it comes from the same place as tap water.

I bought a Reverse Osmosis system from Costco for $160 and had it installed for about $75 for a total of $235. At $6.50 a gal. I broke even at about 36 gal. I have a line that runs to the ice maker. Other iced drinks are not contaminated by foul tasting ice.

With several filters and the membrane many contaminates including bacteria are removed.

Even as one poster stated at 22.5 cents for 20 oz. That is $1.44 gal. My RO paid for it's self at 163 gal. Well worth the money in my estimation.

Same here. We drink water that goes through our reverse osmosis filter or bottled water. The water in SoCal SUCKS. It tastes terrible.

Ami, your daughter lives down here, dude. I'll sell her bottled water for $5.50 a gallon, K?

You are making up facts again , but that's okay cuz I'll make a few bucks per case. A 24-pack of 16.9 oz bottles of Arrowhead Bottled Water (Name brand) is $3.49 in this morning’s paper. That works out to around a $1.10 per gallon. Pretty good price for the convenience of being able to carry a few of them in the car or backpack. 'Course I'm sure you'd rather see them drinking freaking soda or some such, huh?
