a book just published has raised once again the criminality of Union Carbide and its then President, Warren Anderson.
For those of you who don't know and those of you who have forgotten in the early hours of Dec. 3, 1984, gas leaked from a tank of methyl isocyanate (MIC) at a plant in Bhopal, India, owned and operated by Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL).
The deaths eventually numbered somewhere between 16,000 and 30,000, but even at the lower figure its still 3 times more than bin Laden is alleged to have killied.
American Courts, under pressure from Corporate America who were fearful of the huge amounts of money involved, threw the case for compensation out saying it was India's problem.
And an Interpol Warrant was issued for the arrest of Warren Anderson which is still valid today.
Warren Anderson disappeared.
So there you have it. The bare bones of a criminally inspired act that murdered upward of 30,000 Indian citizens.
But the corruption uncovered in American corporate society, the American judiciary and even, believe it or not, in American politics shocked even hardened observers of the United States
Union Carbide refused, and haven't disclosed to this day, the exact composition of the lethal gas cloud that drifted over the sleeping city of Bhopal. The result? The doctors couldn't treat the survivors and just had to let them die.
But now this book has been published and an American Court has ordered that Union Carbide produce all the documentation it has in its possession within 90 days.
We have yet to see whether they will or not.
Incidentally the Indian Courts fearful of interfereing with foreign investment granted $470,000,000 in full settlement of all claims arising from the tragedy.
A rough total of £400 for each person.
Good eh?
