30 Poems in 30 Days (Redux)

8 - 9 Back to Work (Harrisham rhyme)

The man in the suit loaded his gun,
ending the vow he made his woman,
"Gonna give it all up. You're the one
and only for me, may the thun-
der strike me down and you shun
rendezvousing with me. I'm done."

The empty bed is
just a thing,
between schedules and
difference in body temp, I
had barely noticed it,
but the drop in
conversations
---length
---tone
---content
that was a sure sign
that things needed
turning around,
Nothing is as loud as
silence.

Intimate Interlude

Naked,
Lit by fire light
she draws him down to her.
Gladly he kneels astride her thighs
while her hands caress him.
He leans forward,
they kiss.

A Rictameter.

The Shepherd

Come the Spring he stays with the flock each night,
listens to them as they jostle and shift
restless under the still brittle starlight.
His care and intuition is a gift,
ushering the new-born lambs his delight.
Finding pregnant ewes that might go adrift,
first time mothers all, but they have no fear
familiar with their shepherd, always near.

As sky lightens the birthing time arrives,
comforting and reassuring each ewe,
ready to assist newly quickened lives
appearing with early morning dew.
Sometimes as many as in fours and fives
at a time and the shepherd just makes do.
He takes home the lambs that are rejected,
making sure that none will be neglected.

Ottava rima

Dream of Acadia

On the late mailboat to Isle au Haut
the bay ripples and slaps a gentle tune
as if to accompany the last rays of light
through gloomy skies, as if fingers reach
for the darkening swells.

We dock surrounded by pines,
giant spruce, granite outcroppings.
Far off we spot a fish eagle: an osprey
with its giant wingspan dives quicksilver,
hungry and dead on accurate.

Our cottage feels slightly damp,
salt in the air, grit underfoot
on warped floors, but our bedsheets
are crisp, the quilts warm. We sweeten
the night with after dinner kisses,
lips sticky with pear juice, buttery
and scented with cinnamon toast.

8 - 11 She's got range.

Terrycloth rubbing on
slow, deliberate entrance.
"You're still here? It's over.
Go home."

Might as well,
most anti-climatic
non-spoiler yet.

New York Stories

1. Mugged on 42nd Street and 7th Avenue, after which
I work my stomp walk and my angry I will
fuck you up face but big eyes too sad as usual.

2. Patty of the long red hair chats up Jon Hammond
Jr, and we all smoke a doobie in his flat. Guitars
on the walls, spiral stairs. I split. Patty stays.

3. A Moon for the Misbegotten is revived
at the Morasco and it is wonderfully horridly
drunk just like us after we miss the last train.

Spring Tide

Low tide

the kind that only happens
when the moon gathers
the depths to her breast

exposing miles of scoured sand
and sea whispers

breakers too far
for ears to clearly hear

Stranded fish
landlubbers now
shrouded in drying seaweed
one eye gazing blindly skyward
unaware of the storm warning

dark clouds
billowing ominously
on the horizon.

What now,
that you've brought me
to my knees?
Made me see the naked truth
of where I stand
what I'd be willing to do

Now, there's a fist dunked in blood
beating in my chest
every drop of it mine
spilled when you wrested
the shreds of my pride

So, I try to find grace in my defeat
head held high
straightened spine
become accustomed to this squeeze
where my heart's supposed to be

8 - 13 Same Room Swap

Spontaneously synchronized,
they moved in sparse motions
of unforeseen parallelism,
lips meeting lips,
then nipples,
while hands left breasts to
wind themselves down between
matching parting thighs,
slipping into tight--but loosening--spaces
for the first time.

Animal Acts

Grovel, waddle, wallow, groan,

Mingle, muster, bluster, moan,

Whistle, bristle, bark and whine

Wiggle, waggle, toot and twine,

Rustle, bustle, wrestle, bleat,

Hover, huddle, coo and tweet,

Slinking, spinning, squawk and squeak

Mumble, mutter, moo and tweak,

Howling, prowling, growling, shriek,

Un-translated human speak.

Mind Under Down

Blank slate
Blank mind
Mind bending
Mind over matter
Matter of fact
Matter to me
Me and my shadow
Me, myself, and I
I touch myself
I can dream about you
You send me
You might think
Think out loud
Think like a man
Man of honor
Man on the Moon
Moon landing
Moon river
River of dreams
River of love
Love hurts
Love takes time
Time for change
Time of my life
Life changing
Life blood
Blood sugar sex magik
Blood red
Red rose
Red letter day
Day after day
Day is done
Done to death
Done with this
This love
This foolish game
Game of chance
Game on
On the edge
On with the show
Show of strength
Show and tell
Tell the truth
Tell me lies
Lies that bind
Lies down
Down there
Down under
Under
There

Debby's Big Night

Debby you are one lucky dancer
with your floaty pink dress, silk
toe shoes, hair in a French Twist
and Bill Evans leading you to ribbons
of pas de deux: feminine, light
and delicate as bells. You're a waltz

for a sunny day deepening
to richer hues when Cannonball
cuts in and says "This is jazz,
baby girl," so you leap but also
pat your feet and snap snap
a bounce into your arabesque

right into that shimmering place
between the hi hat tip tap and Percy's
steady um um um. You're all
straight up to space like a rocket
and the stars twinkle "Look at you
spinning it with these planets!"

Go head with your bad self, your pink
dress and bliss, Miss D. It's your waltz.
