It is nice to know that I have got 'something' instead of just 'back pain'. It doesn't make any difference whatever to the condition to give it a name.
What is good is that now I know that I can exercise as much as I am able to without fear of breaking something. Up to now I had been told that most of the damage was caused by 'repeated mechanical trauma'. That is still true but is not responsible for the deterioration over the last five years or so.
The 'repeated mechanical trauma' was the result of a misspent youth doing too much physical activity without safety equipment - Rugby, Rock-Climbing, Horse Riding, Motorcycle Racing (track and cross-country), Mountaineering, Surf Rescue, Cliff Rescue etc. I wasn't much good at anything but I tried and usually fell off (the horse, motorbike, rock, cliff, surf...).
Within the limits of the trauma damage I can now try to regain the movement I had lost. That's good. What is bad is that the condition will eventually get worse. All I can do is delay the eventual loss of movement.
