2024 Republican National Convention Thread

So many lies …

TRUMP CLAIM: Trump argued there was "a massive invasion at our southern border that has spread misery, crime, poverty, disease and destruction to communities all across our land."

FACT CHECK: This is false. There is no evidence of a major surge in crime caused by recent arrivals and Trump's claims ignore the fact that crime is down across the country overall.

TRUMP CLAIM: Trump said he would end the immigration crisis "by closing our border and finishing the wall, most of which I have already built.

FACT CHECK: False. Contrary to Trump’s claim that he built more than 500 miles of border wall, by the end of his term, and after various funding fights in Washington, he had actually implemented roughly 450 miles of barriers – much of which was just upgrading existing barriers that already existed, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Of that, roughly 50 miles were new walls constructed where no barriers previously existed.

TRUMP CLAIM: While discussing the border and immigration, Trump said his administration "ended all catch-and-release."

FACT CHECK: False, needs more context. Though Trump attempted to end the catch-and-release practice under his presidency, migrants were more likely to be "released" through this process under Trump compared to Biden, according to the libertarian Cato Institute. The Cato analysis found that Biden’s immigration authorities released 48.6% of individuals apprehended at the border, while the Trump administration released 52.2% over roughly a two-year period.

TRUMP CLAIM: Trump said of Biden's administration, "This is the only administration that said we're going to raise your taxes by four times what you're paying now."

FACT CHECK: False. Biden proposes a tax increase of roughly 7% over the next decade, not 300%, as Trump claims. About 83% of the proposed Biden tax increase would be borne by the top 1% of taxpayers, who earn just under $1 million a year in income.

Fact-checking Donald Trump's RNC speech on immigration, the economy, world affairs and more

You have to be extremely gullible to believe anything The Donald says.

Comperatore's last name was misspelled on his fire jacket. It was missing the "a". CBS News learned from the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company that this had been done intentionally, as there was only enough space on the coat for a certain number of letters.
Yeah, ok.
But you’re trying to honor a fallen colleague or, in the case of trump, one of the rubes you’ve been actively conning to get you elected. I think they could have managed slipping in an ‘A’ to get it right. You're organizing the RNC. You had 5 days. Find a bigger jacket or use smaller type.

I didn't watch the convention. (If I need an excuse I was busy having an operation).

Tl Dr from the convention - double haters weren't convinced.

Both are technically accurate as we've had both a black president and vice president. 🇺🇸
Part of Biden's strong support with African Americans is that they saw an older white man serving with grace and humility under a younger black man for 8 years. He always had Obama's back, never tried to undercut or sabotage him. It's the same with Biden's treatment of Kamala Harris. He treats her as a valuable member of the team.

When it comes to equal rights, Biden doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk, and people notice.

not finding the article showing the street artist's images both in and outside the RNC, but there's one of his pictures that portrays trump as the iconic one of General Macarthur in khaki smoking the corncob pipe and bearing the slogan "I SHALL RETURN"

naturally, trump looks a lot slimmer, more upright and like a military figure; this is truly obscene given his determination never to serve in the forces and his disservice towards vets in resistance to getting them the help they need and his comments about prisoners of war.

it was also of note that this artist met with NO resistance from law enforcement either inside or outside the building as he created his images; he's celebrated among republicans since he venerates trump.

(The Hill) — A video played at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee Wednesday evening included a clip from earlier this year of a white fraternity member making monkey gestures at a Black woman on the University of Mississippi campus.

The video, meant to praise anti-“woke” college students, used a clip from early May in which pro-Palestinian demonstrators — protesting the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza — and counter-protesters confronted each other.

As the white fraternity member approaches the Black woman and begins making the racist gestures, the announcer can be heard saying that these students are “giving us some hope there that not all college students have gone woke.”

wtf!???

Steely Dan is requesting a little dirty work from the house band at the Republican National Convention.

After the band Sixwire performed the Dan’s iconic song, “Reelin’ In the Years,” as part of its dad-rock-heavy RNC setlist, the band’s official Facebook page posted a message suggesting a different track instead: the anti-Trump ballad “Tin Foil Hat.”
Donald Fagan, the band’s sole surviving cofounder, also shared the message on his personal Facebook page.

The song in question isn’t a Steely Dan tune, but a Todd Rundgren track featuring Fagan ― and it’s very specifically about Trump.
