45 residents of a tiny desert town — near Death Valley — tear their hair out, caught in a corporate-double-talk
Kafka-esque hell of unimaginable proportions.

A technical quirk prevents Darwin dialup from ever connecting at any speed above 28.8. In layman's terms, a phone line
can only convert from digital to analog a certain number of times to allow 56k. And guess what? Darwin's phone lines exceed
that number of analog/digital connections. So a 56k connection is technically impossible. The whole V.90 standard is
impossible, so you'll never even see a 33.6k connection.

Darwin, California, is about eight miles from the west border of Death Valley National Park The one and only hand. (DVNP),
making it the closest "private" town to Death Valley, the second hottest place on Earth.

It is halfway (40 air miles to either) between the highest point in the continental United States (Mount Whitney —
14,496 feet) and the lowest point (Badwater, Death Valley — 282 feet below sea level, the second hottest place on Earth).
It is also about 240 miles north of Los Angeles.

Is it possible to get gasoline (petrol) in Trona?

Nearest places with gasoline to Trona:
Ridgecrest (30 miles west of Trona)
Johannesburg (43 miles south west of Trona)
Panamint Springs (44 miles north of Trona)

3/30/12 - No gas in Trona

There is only one town with gas at present on the way to Death Valley from the West. The town of Ridgecrest, California.
The best place to gas up before reaching Panamint Springs, Ca. Ridgecrest is about 130 miles from Death Valley. Highway
178, known as Trona Road leading toward Death Valley, is not currently being serviced with gas availability. The town of
Trona is the last gas stop before Panamint Springs, and Stove Pipe Wells. Since this current gas shortage there it is
best to fill your vehicle totally full before continuing on to Death Valley. It is advisable to have your vehicle with enough
gas for at least 200 miles of driving. Gas can top off at almost six dollars a gallon after leaving Ridgecrest.
