I am attempting to install and run a small program on my computer.

Issue number 1, I am running Windows 7 and it is only compatible with previous versions BUT I was told that I could possibly select a previous version with which to run it (?).

Issue number 2, I am receiving the following error: Source file not found: E\office.DLL.

A little "Googling" goes a long way and I have found several sites that tell how to restore a DLL. But I get lost halfway through.

This seems like a simple fix from what I read but I guess not for me and not today. Can anyone help me out?

thanks!

I'm not sure what kind of program you are trying to install, but many older programs won't run on Windows 7. Even though Windows 7 has a 32 bit mode, it is basically a 64 bit operating system. Most older software is 32 bit.

The error code: "E\office.DLL", means the software you are trying to install does not have the correct "Data Link Library" file. E\ is the drive where Windows is looking for the DLL file.

If you are trying to install an older version of Windows Office, it should run on Windows 7. If you are having a problem installing a Windows program, you should be able to find a solution on Microsoft's web site. They are pretty comprehensive with their own software.

Thank you so much and well SHOOT! I'm wearing my "private investigator" hat today and have a SIMcard reader and software, I ordered it from a source I've ordered from previously but think I may have taken it in the ass this time, and not in a good way...

Appreciate your info!

Check the SIMcard reader manufacturers web site and see if it is compatible with Windows 7. The manufacturers web site may even have a solution.

You can try to copy the install files onto your computer to a seperate folder there. Then open the folder and locate the install or setup file. Right click on the file, and choose properties. On the window that pops up, you select the compability tab, and check the "run this program in compability mode for, and then you can try an earlier windows version there. I will suggest that you try with windows xp

Thank you as well, Shyguy! Of course the moment I get some ideas, my internet connection is interrupted for much of the day & the a ppv event caused outages in some areas. Can't wait to give it one last try tomorrow then perhaps, on with my life!

Ohhh Shyguy, you're brilliant and I'm still just a bit limited. ;)
It worked, your suggestion, in a way... now my only obstacle appears to be a missing DLL apparently related to "office".
Now, those of you who know what you're doing probably find this amusing ;) but it is frustrating the hell out of me!
I'll keep you abreast!

It could be something simple, such as the drive E: cannot be accessed.
This has happened to me with a SD card and it is just a matter of pulling the thing out and pushing it firmly back in. But if you can read other files on E: then that rules out that one.

1) Windows 7 does allow a compatibility mode but that mode is not available on all versions of Windows 7. If I remember correctly, comparability mode is only available in Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate, not Windows 7 Home edition.

2) E://office.dll suggests to me this is an external drive like a CD/DVD drive, SD Card, or USB for memory stick. Should this be the case then there may be some program blocking it, such as your firewall or anti-virus software.

my final attempt... probably

I sure appreciate all the offers to assist, I've not had time over the weekend to get online much but
maybe adding this information will be helpful. I promise, I will give up soon! And I sincerely appreciate
all the help and wish we could all go out for cocktails once this is resolved!!

Here's the scenario:

I am, in fact running Windows 7 Home Edition. (deal breaker... ?) and I can find the E drive when I look for it.

I purchased a SIMcard reader described as follows:

USB cell phone SIM card reader / writer.
Supports all cell phone SIM cards.
Lets you read, edit and backup phonebook data and text messages (SMS) on your SIM card.
Allows you to copy the content of one SIM card to another.
Information safekeeping.
Plug-and-play compatible.
LED indicator.
Small and lightweight.
Compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0.
System requirements : Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP
Installation CD driver included.

I purchased from a vendor online with whom I've done business previously with no problems. I HAVE had issues with several overseas vendors so I've chosen to NOT do business with them. So imagine my surprise when my paypal receipt came from paypal.com.hk. Oh bummer, Hong Kong.

I received the product, the box is quite simple, it says "SIMcard reader". No manufacturer, no logo, no
web address for support, nothing. Same with the disc.

There is enclosed a tiny piece of paper that says "insert disc and follow directions". I put the SIMcard
in the reader and put it in the USB port, then When I installed the disc, a page opens that shows an .exe file,
a couple of worddocs, one in English, one in Chinese. The worddoc doesn't tell me specifically which file to
open/run first so have tried each in different order, each time the actual program begins to run, I get all excited... then the screen vanishes and I get the error about the DLL.

I called the vendor, spoke with a heavily accented representative who "escalated my case". I received an email asking me to detail my problem, he was apparently told I was having a problem with a phone. :(

So lesson learned on purchasing from them as well however, I really want to see if this works, I wouldn't
have purchased it if it weren't an issue!

With this additional information, therefore, does anyone want to take a stab?

Thanks!

Often with USB stuf the order of installation is important.

You can try it this way.

1: Run the disc first without the unit plugged in. (.exe file)

2: Plug the unit in without the sim card and see if it is detected.

3: Insert the sim card into the unit.

That's a rough guide but try that and see what works and what doesn't.

Also a list of the files on the disc would be helpful, particularly the .exe file.

Thanks Quoll, I was thinking about that as well. I was at work, the files on my computer at home, I'll grab the disc on my way out tomorrow & post.

I adore each and every one of you for wanting to help me succeed!

I hate to say it, but I think you got stung on this one. The clue here is “System requirements: Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP”. It doesn’t specifically list Windows 7. This piece of hardware appears to have been made before Windows 7 was released on the market.

When you install a piece of hardware on any computer, it also has to have a driver installed. The problem is that your computer and your SIM Card Reader was made by two different manufacturers, and being the case, the language the software, (or firmware in the case of the Card Reader), of each is written in its own language. (Not like English and Chinese, but programming languages like C++, Java, Perl, Pascal, COBOL, Etc). Every manufacturer uses its own preferred programming language; Windows is written mostly in C++ and C#. The firmware on your SIM Cars Reader may even be written in an Assembly Language.

To get these different languages to talk to each other, a driver also has to be installed. Think of a driver as a short computer program that translates one programming language into another so the computer can understand the information being sent from the Card Reader.

With that said, “E:” is the port where Windows is looking for the driver it needs to install the SIM Card Reader, and the file “office.dll” is the instructions Windows needs to know how to install the driver. Without the correct instructions, (.dll = data link library), Windows doesn’t know how to install the SIM Card Reader. Unless you have the equivalent of a Doctorate in computer programming, a .dll file is not something you can generally add to a device driver.

I suspect your SIM Card Reader was made before Windows 7, and simply does not have the correct driver. Without the correct driver, the Card Reader will not work on Windows 7; however, all may not be lost. Sometimes you can find an updated driver that will work.

First: Send an email to the vendor, (the one who sent you the email asking for detailed information), and ask him for the correct driver to install your SIM card Reader on Windows 7. Usually hardware manufacturers will supply updated drivers when asked. Don’t worry that he asked about a phone, often Asian companies have only one form letter to send to their customers. Just include any and all information you can about your SIM Card Reader, and tell him that you need the correct driver for Windows 7. I suspect they have other complaints about the same problem.

The second thing you can do: If you can find any kind of serial number, or indentifying number or name on the Card Reader, Google it and see what comes up. Often other people are having the same problem and may have a solution.

If you have the wrong driver, (installation software), it is generally something you can’t fix, you have to find the right driver.

With Windows, Vista and Windows 7 often use the same drivers, but Windows XP, (and earlier versions Windows operating systems), are completely different.

Hope this helps.

Intelligent people are sexy and your reply really turned me on.

I'm going to do two things, I will discuss this with the vendor AND... I'm going to run by the home of the most brilliant yet technologically challenged Man I know, my Dad... I'm SURE he's still running XP. Thank goodness for people resistant to change!

I'll let you (all) know!

If you can install it on your dad's computer, (running Windows XP), that should prove two things: the SIM Card Reader does work, and the most likely cause of your problems is that you don't have the correct driver for Windows 7. If that is the case, hopefully the vendor will be able to supply the correct driver.

There is another option... if you were to make your machine a dual boot machine. Partition your hard drive to install two operating systems. Windows 7 and Windows XP. or better yet Linux Mint does this nicely but windows software doesn't run on Linux. However from within Linux you can install a virtual machine and run windows WP from within that environment or using Wine which simulates a windows environment. Then you could have the best of both worlds. All my machines are dual boot. I like Linux because there is no need for anti-virus software and it is faster than windows.

Well God Bless You for thinking that this is remotely within my ability.
I guess I'll have to put it on the back burner for a bit and/or till I get to Dad's.
This has consumed more time than I anticipated. Now that the weather is getting so nice, I think I'll find something else to do... and WRITE more!

Thanks!
