Two people were killed and about 10 others injured in a shooting at a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, nightclub early Sunday morning, police said.

The shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. at the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge, the Cedar Rapids Police Department said in a statement. The club was hosting a 90s-themed party, according to a post on social media. Nearly 150 people were inside the nightclub.




Cedar Rapids officers were on routine patrol downtown at the time of the shooting, the statement said, and were able to respond immediately.

Police believe that it was a targeted shooting and the statement says "there is no threat to public safety." Police believe that two shooters were involved.

In a press conference on Sunday, Cedar Rapids police referred to the shooting as a "senseless act of violence."

Police did not release any information about possible suspects or arrests. The investigation remains ongoing and anyone "present at the time of the shooting or with knowledge of the incident" is asked to contact investigators, the statement said.


The injured are receiving medical care at multiple local hospitals.

"Shock, grief, anger, disappointment, are just a few of the emotions I'm sure we all feel today," said Tiffany O'Donnell, the mayor of Cedar Rapids. "This is not who we are. This is not Cedar Rapids. Today I challenge all of us to meet the need so clearly before us. We must be the change."

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley said in a tweet that "violence is never the answer."
