Anyone up for it? My friend Fiona Z introduced this to me earlier today, and now I'm HOOKED. You and another writer friend connect, agree to both push to write at least a thousand words in one hour, and see if you can meet the deadline. You can start something new or you can continue with something you've been working on. It's an incredible rush.

So...anyone up for it?

Did it earlier today. 4,000 words in three hours. Didn't need a push.

This comes off a bit pompouse, but I could have misinterpreted it. I'm also just pointing it out, I'm not trying to spark a war.

The point is that 1,000 an hour isn't that difficult a goal.

Why is stating the truth always seen as pompous? Is it an inferiority complex thing? If you need to pull me down rather than pulling yourself up, I guess you can see it that way.

It can be. Depends on the person and the time they have available and how quickly or slowly they write. At some point, when I have the time and focus (bwahahaha) I'll try it.

So what's your fucking point? Because I must be misinterpreting it...

Translation I'm better than you.

Translation part two:

I am allegedly a very successful real life author, but spend my days here trying to make new writers feel bad about their efforts.

See my sig for more.

If you can't see that statement as arrogant then you need to stop sucking Pilot's fucking cock and open your fucking eyes.

Is that enough fucking F-bombs for you you fucking fuck?

1k an hour isn't hard for a retired old fart like him.

But for many Like you said, time and focus are not givens depending on your situation. If you work a lot and are tired, or like yourself have some young kids its not that easy.

I'm fortunate to have time and peace to write in, but see no need to mock those who don't

as for the actual task I've never tried to count my words hourly. I used to keep a journal on how many words a day I wrote, but it was just to see how consistent I was. Now I don't bother.

I think you should make it more difficult on yourself

They have to be 1000 good words

I agree to some degree lovecraft. Not sure that was the original intent of the person who started the thread. I tend to dump onto the page, but it wasn't always like that.

I think writing 1 k an hour is a great way to push new writers to write. Forget about editing while you go. Forget about art. Spew it out. If you end up after the edit with 300 good words, excellent.

That was the greatest hurdle to my writing when I began, keeping the flow going. The approach of dumping allowed me to practice the grammar and punctuation without having to worry about make sure it was art first.

The rule after writing this way is to approach the writing in the Stephen King manner. Kill your darlings. Edit the crap out of it so you're left with something reasonably like decent writing.

However, just writing is problem #1 to the new writer, not being able to slash what you wrote is problem #2.

Maybe it should be "Write 1k works in an hour, and then in the next hour, reduce it to 250 words." This would allow the new writer to enter a flow state to write, but also learn to give up the crap.

Fuck the two of you who turned this into a goddamn dick measuring contest. For everyone else who had valid things to say, thank you.

I'll ask again: does anyone want to do 1K1HR?

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

What two? If Lovecraft68 and me--if that run of Lovecraft68 posts I haven't opened were about me--I'll point out that my posts were made before he arrived--and were to note that 1,000 words/an hour isn't such a big barrier. By all means do the exercise if you have trouble writing at that volume or need someone to goose you along to get it done--and think it's a writing goal you need to attain. But it's not really the number of words you write an hour that has a lot to do with the quality of the outcome.

Perhaps rather than say 1,000 words/hour wasn't such a big goal, I should have asked what you thought reaching the goal would mean to your writing.

(By the way, just because you open a thread doesn't mean you own it--and I don't think questioning the whole need for such an exercise is off the beam on a writing discussion board.)

Thank you, LC. You're absolutely right. There are many factors that can contribute to your ability to get the 1K done or not. :rose:

That was a single exchange. And it had nothing to do with the tired old "comparing dicks" crap. If the thread got turned into something gruesome, it happened later--and neither I nor loquere pushed it. Rather interesting how you pick and choose who is fighting--it shows that you're as much into this backbiting as anyone else is. You're just promoting that. Grow up.

I wouldn't be surprised if no one answers the ad, because it's a lame approach to developing writing capability.
