The family of Kaitlyn Hunt wants prosecutors to reconsider the charges against their daughter. Under a plea deal on the table, she would face two years of house arrest and one year of probation for engaging in a physical relationship with her younger girlfriend, a student at a Sebastian, Fla., high school. Her mom says she’s no criminal and was being targeted, in part, because of her sexuality.

Legal age of consent in Florida is 18.

It's appalling how more and more people are receiving decades-long prison sentences for crimes other than murder, rape, robbery, etc... I guess the prison industrial complex is expanding.

In other words, the sexual relationship began after Hunt turned eighteen. That makes her a pedophile. What if the younger girl had been 14 or 13 or 9? The law makes allowances for 16 year olds with near age partners. But 15 is under age no matter what. Just because Hunt is a lesbian does not give her a free pass.

...but if she accepts the plea, she'd be pleading guilty to a felony and I would think that carries mandatory sex offender registration.

Perhaps that's essentially why her family is still trying to get the state to drop the charges...

My understanding is that the relationship began when Hunt was still 17. So she's a "pedophile" (pedophiles aren't into 15-year-olds, but we'll ignore that point for the time being) because she didn't break up with the younger girl when she became an adult on her 18th birthday? Statutory rape is an adult having sex with a person under the age of consent. The older girl is guilty, end of story. If she does not take the plea bargain, she will be convicted and end up doing more time in a real jail than she might have done.

If Kaitlyn were a man, she would be facing a worse penalty than she is now.

Sexual intercourse takes many forms, and anybody on this site should know that.
