This is a wonderful series of books by Eric Flint. Although I am not sure how to classify the genre.

They spend a couple of paragraphs setting it up: some aliens playing a joke with string theory made an error, and a piece of modern day West Virginia (the fictional Grantville) got cut out, and dropped in the middle of Germany during the 30-year War. Hence the title "1632".

The series is about how modern people might cope with the situation, how to remake our modern civilization, how it would interface with the people and politics of the time. There are lots of facets to this.

You also get to learn some history, as the historical figures are brought into it. Gustavus Adolphus, Richelieu, Gallileo, the Barberini Pope and Cardinals...

You can get the first couple of books in e-book form for free from Baen.com, in their free library.

There are two main threads here, the main story books, 1632, 1633 et al, and the "Grantville Gazette".

1632 etc concerns the main figures, and moves the grand scheme along.

The Grantville Gazette is about minor characters and plot points, and also contains factual articles on various subjects, such as where/how to find oil, how to make glass, what it would take to set up a phone system... sort of a 17th Century How Stuff Works. Where do you get rubber from? Or cloth to make clothing? It explains the history of it in Our Time Line, and goes into how it might be approached in this alternate time line.

Some of the characters are quite appealing, and there are some very funny parts to go along with everything else.

There are almost a dozen books in the main series so far, and at least an equal number of the Grantville Gazettes.

Lots of fun reading, and quite affordable. After you get the free ones, you can get the e-books of the others for $6 each. And the Gazettes can be bought in groups of three for $15.

Since you can get the first couple for free, in any e-book format including html, (all DRM free!), you might want to check it out and see if you like it.

Happy reading!
