Trump continues his baseless attacks on Springfield.

On Friday, three schools in Springfield were evacuated due to bomb threats. At least one of the threats made disparaging comments about Haitians, according to Springfield Mayor Bob Rue.

It comes after city hall and several other buildings, as well as one school, were evacuated on Thursday due to threats.

Trump was asked whether he was considering a visit to the town during a press conference at his golf course in Los Angeles on Friday.

"I can say this, we will do large deportations from Springfield, Ohio – large deportations. We're going to get these people out. We're bringing them back to Venezuela," he said.

The migrants in Springfield are mostly from Haiti, and have legal permission to be in the US under a federal programme for Haitians.

Probably came from leftists angry at the spotlight the pissed-off citizens were shining on the issue caused by the failures of Kamala Harris. We know that the citizens didn't threaten to bomb their own town.

I'm curious, have you ever owned a dog or cat?
For extra credit: if you did own them, did you raise them as pets or as a protein source?

I was surprised to learn yesterday that "<insert minority here> EATS DOGS!" has been a conservative talking point since 1888!

It was first used to prohibit Chinese immigration to the United States, becoze "errybody knows" that Chinese people ate dogs.

Back in the UK where I lived, I saw the same kind of ignorant, bigoted remarks aimed at Chinese people (many of whom weren't Chinese but Korean or other Asian nationalities as well as Brits with Chinese heritage): it was mainly about cats, and stimulated by the opening of local Chinese takeaways in the area... it faded away once Chinese takeaway became so damned popular that it was the go-to takeaway for most there.

A resurgence of the 'geese/pets' hate talk happened when parts of outer London saw a big rise in refugees/immigrants during the Serb/Kosovan war, and similar hatred aimed at Pakistanis. The reason there were so many 'dark/er' skinned faces around was due to tory influence pushing some of the poorest people into an already poor area. The fact there were so many pale-skinned Lithuanians, Russians, Germans, Scandinavians there never made an impact. They were welcomed.

I recall the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics when the government temporarily banned street vendors from selling popular "dogmeat kababs on a stick" for the duration of the Olympics.

Personal experience: I was doing a long term assignment in the Czech Republic around 1993 after communism fell. (We were bringin' capitalism and free enterprise to the masses). Food quality was all over the map. One of the junior consultants we had on staff remarked he couldn't believe the street vendors were selling hamburgers for the equivalent of 15 cents each at sidewalk food stands across the street. One of our translators told him not to buy things from street vendors. Why not? "Cat burgers".

A resident of Springfield, OH, has told a city commission meeting that locals are being displaced from their homes to make way for Haitian migrants.

The man, who has not been named, said the federal government was paying “triple the rent” for Haitians arriving in the town, thus incentivizing landlords to prioritize immigrants over existing residents.

Addressing the city commission, the resident – who said he’d worked with the homeless community for more than 25 years – said he didn’t know of “a single homeless Haitian in this town because they all got vouchers” from the federal government.

“I personally know, and I’ll testify under oath [with] my hand to God, somebody that their house – they were there seven years,” he told the meeting. “Somebody that lost their house, they were there seven years. The landlord said, ‘Hey, I need you to move out. Find a temporary place. I’m gonna remodel it and then you can come back.’”

Look, what has happened to Haiti is a real tragedy, and unlike some other countries, a massive part in its decline was played by the United States. We went out of our way to make it rough on those slaves who dared to rebel against their white masters....much of it was antebellum Southern outrage over such a notion...and fear of it catching on here in the USA. That being said, at this point, there's nothing much that we can do that won't make things worse. We can take the refugees who can pass the vetting process, I suppose. That's it. That should still be a substantial number, I imagine. For Haiti itself, the options are few and bleak. Some relief from various agencies, but Somalia showed us what can happen to that. When we tried to intervene with force to protect the relief, it was a disaster. History is likely to repeat itself here if we get boots on the ground.

If only we hadn't debt-trapped that place centuries back, but too late for that.

it's weird how the trumpers can't understand why the racist rhetoric by their orange gawd is dangerous. even if one haitian killed and ate one pet, you don't go on national television and in a debate say, "haitians are killing and eating pets in Springfield!"
