Suspect surrendered into police custody

Three people were killed and nine others injured after gunfire ripped through a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo., during an hours-long standoff that unfolded Friday afternoon.

Officials announced the causalities — one police officer and two civilians — at a brief news conference Friday evening.

Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers called the incident a "terrible, terrible tragedy" that could have been much worse.

"We mourn the loss of two civilians and we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer," he said.

The officer was from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, which is about 10 minutes away from the clinic and responded to help city police with the shooting, officials said.

The five other officers and four civilians injured in the incident are in "good" condition, police said.

The standoff involved at least two exchanges of gunfire and lasted about five hours, before the gunman was taken into police custody.

For the American media, whether or not something is a "terrorist attack" or just plain old crime typically relates to what the killer looks like. Remember when we had the Oregon shooting a few weeks ago, and the busybodys and AJs of the world were demanding to learn the name and see a picture of the shooter, so they would know how to react.

Colorado Springs is one of the most wingnutty large cities in the United States, headquarters of Focus on the Family (and the somewhat less insane Air Force Academy).

Did FotF have something to do with inspiring this attack? In the words of Rush Limbaugh, "it would be irresponsible not to speculate."
