Republican Karl Rove says Trump got ‘crushed by a woman he called dumb as a rock’ during ‘train wreck’ debate​

Veteran Republican strategist says Trump’s ‘furious’ performance ‘catastrophic’ whereas Harris was ‘calm, confident, strong and focused on the future’

Writing in The Wall Street Journal, Rove says the former president’s performance was “far worse than anything Team Trump could have imagined” and Trump was “visibly rattled” as Harris “launched rocket after rocket at him.”

Rove notes that according to an analysis by The New York Times, Harris spent 46 percent of her time on the attack, while Trump’s attacks only amounted to 29 percent of his time.

“Debates aren’t won on defense,” he wrote.

Going deeper, Rove writes that Trump was bested by his emotions when he must have known Harris would try and get him to lose his cool.

“He took the bait almost every time she put it on the hook, offering a pained smile as she did,” Rove said. “Rather than dismissing her attacks and launching his strongest counterarguments against her, Mr Trump got furious.”

Trump published an item to his social media platform the morning after the debate, pretending he’d triumphed the night before, and asking, “[W]hy would I do a Rematch?”

Hours later, the former president told reporters that he would participate in additional debates on NBC and Fox News, before adding moments later, “ut right now we have to determine whether or not we’d want to do it.”

In case that wasn’t quite confusing enough, one of Trump’s senior advisors told CNN the morning after the debate that the GOP candidate “is going to do three debates,” right around the same time that the former president himself appeared on Fox and said, “I don’t know that I want to do another debate.”

During the same on-air appearance, Fox’s Steve Doocy raised the prospect of a debate moderated by his colleagues, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. As a New York Times report noted, Trump didn’t exactly endorse the idea.

“Well, I wouldn’t want to have Martha and Bret; I would love to have somebody else other than Martha and Bret,” Mr. Trump said, before ticking off his preferred alternatives, including the Fox pundits Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters. “Let’s give other people a shot,” he said.

2-day poll shows Harris lead of 5% among registered voters:
