Every once in a while, one discovers information that fundamentally changes an opinion or a position on certain issues. Even carved in stone Amicus views are subject to this phenomenon.
This program was so compelling that I could not and did not watch the conclusion; I did not want to view the inevitable ending.
As a kid, I ‘rode the rails’, hitched rides on freight trains, mainly as a lark and an adventure. It was exciting and quite dangerous to run alongside and board a moving freight car; perhaps that was part of the glamour.
There was no glamour to these Guatemalan, Honduran and Mexican children, some pre-teen, in this documentary that followed a group of them on their journey to Estados Unitas.(sp)
I took only a few notes as the film demanded attention for continuity and I will only refer to one, an eight year old beautiful little girl who was riding the rails to find her Mother in Minnesota.
Hundreds of children on just this one journey; thousands, tens of thousands over a period of time, with only the clothes on their backs their only possessions and the dream of America in their eyes. They thought only of surviving the journey without starving, being raped, both sexes, beaten or crushed under the Iron Wheels of “The Beast”, as they described the train.
The Mexican government has sent up roaming trucks with food, water and medical aid supplies; that attempt to care for them at the various train stops along the several thousand mile journey from Central America.
For as much of the documentary I watched, it did not offer a political agenda, nor do I upon reflection, but it surely opened another dimension in what I thought I knew about the illegal alien story that has been ongoing for years.
Someone recommended hulu.com as a source for viewing various previously televised specials…I have not taken the time to search but it may be a source if you care to view this documentary.
