Apparently that's what about seventy human lives are worth in the rich bits of London.

That's the price difference between the cladding used on Grenfell Tower and cladding that didn't act like a fucking firelighter. Not £4750 per piece, or even per floor, that's £4750 total for the entire building. But hey, at least the multi millionaires of K+C can continue to enjoy their lowest council tax in the country.

will anything change after this?

Nope. The rich will get richer and the poor will burn in death traps.

Theresa May might go sooner than expected after her performance over the last couple of days. When even The Sun compares her unfavourably to Corbyn, she's fucked.

Who made the decision to use the specific product?

Owner?

Architect?

Contractor?

Typically, I see the project architect specifying building panels, etc.

Unclear at the moment but I'm gonna guess Ryman, the contractor. Said cladding is banned in Germany, by the way. Want to take a wild guess as to why?

It's the PE insulation.

Can't have those millionaires in Holland Park having to look at an ugly building, can we?

Here in the states, there's usually an architect specifying for those jobs, too.

It's not like you're splashing on a couple coats of paint.

yeah, that's not what people are complaining about.

they're bitching because the local council, instead of installing sprinklers or repairing lifts and alarms, spent the 8mil refurb budget on putting up pretty (but flammable) panels on the outside, because the wealthy people didn't want to see ugly buildings in their area.

he wants the rents and taxes those poor residents pay to be spent on actually making the place safe, not appeasing the rich neighbours.

Proceeds to rephrase what I said they are complaining about.

Yea....other people aren't spending their money how "the people" (sean) think they should be spending their money.

Taxes is kinda a fair complaint. But that's those peoples fault and they need to suck on their political choices. You guys clearly need to give that council more money and power, then create an even more powerful and better funded department to keep an eye on them.

The rents? He's wanting to tell the rich how to spend their money.

Botany boy has become unhinged with his constant ascription. It's best not to take anything it says too seriously,

When I tell you how ridiculously stupid you are in the future... remember your post above.

“We don’t know for certain, but it very much looks like this new exterior cladding actually spread the fire rapidly around the building via the exterior,” said Jim Glockling, technical director at the Fire Prevention Association. “The whole safety plan was compromised.”

Huge chunks of the aluminium composite material (ACM) blistered and peeled off the tower during Wednesday’s inferno, showering survivors and rescue workers in acrid ash that covered a radius of several blocks.

There was no requirement to use a fire-resistant version. The Guardian newspaper reported Friday that the supplier, Omnis Exteriors, had been asked to provide non fire-resistant cladding that was 25 cents per square foot cheaper. The report could not be confirmed by NBC News.

Non fire-resistant ACM is banned in the U.S. for buildings taller than 40 feet, manufacturer Reynobond told The Times newspaper.

An inquiry into the deaths of six residents at Lakanal House in south London in 2009 found residents were trapped in their homes as exterior cladding panels burned up in a matter of minutes.

The coroner concluded that building regulations were not up to scratch, but government ministers failed to make mandatory changes, according to the lawyer who represented some of the victims.

70 people died because of how they spent their money. Complaining about it seems to be a more than reasonable reaction.

this is horrific

change will only come about by exposing this kind of crap. i'll lay odds it's happened all over the place, if not cladding then some other substandard shit used that's cheaper and plentiful because it can't be sold in other countries - and you can be damned sure someone somewhere is raking in a tidy little profit from selling these kind of products to councils attempting to save money wherever they can.
