If the entire human race all at once died, what would become of the variouse breeds of domesticated dogs?

What breeds would be the first to follow their masters fate into nonexistence?

What breed(s) of dog would last the longest?

Would interbreeding eliminate all individual breeds, or... after time, would the variouse breeds pack together different from other breeds? i.e. like wolves and coyotes.

eventually... would all breeds revert back to their ancestral wolf state?

Are domestic dogs a branch from wolves? I thought I had run across something which claimed they weren't.

reguardless, I expect the yippe dogs will be the first to die out... I expect they annoy other dogs as much as they do humans.

New Scientist ran a ten-page article on what would happen to London if all humans died. They interviewed environmentalists, architects, naturalists, climatologists, etc.

Would take anout 1,000 years before the last building, (Canary Wharf), fell.

And, to answer your question, dogs would turn feral in under a year. And the big ones would probably eat all the little ones.

Prolly right, They're pretty close to wolves to start with.

I'm putting my money on Shih-Tzus.

I saw a PBS special on it... Most dogs ARE... But not all.

I think that the ones that AREN'T would wind up dying off, while the ones that ARE would eventually de-evolve into some sort of variation of a wolf.

Who is going to let them all out of the houses ?? Mine wouldn't breed he would starve....

The ones that aren't are descended from Jackals. The more "eager to please" ones.

Wolf descendents tend to treat their owners like pack leaders, wheras Jackal descendents treat them more like parents.

Our Humane Society is trying to get people to adopt street dogs from Mexico that look like prize fighters. The ads are a crack up. "All they need is love and some patience from a good family." Family?

All I can say is... and good luck!

Yeah...There's no better pet for little Johnny or Suzie than a wild street dog...

Probably the small lapdogs like shih-tzus, toy poodles, and chihuahuas would die out first, unless enough of them were able to gather and form a pack, or they managed to join a pack of larger dogs. Normal poodles (who are actually close to nromal size for dogs) would probably do okay if they were able to migrate to a temperate climate. The ones living in warm areas would probably overheat too soon with nobody to cut thier hair to be very successful.

Small dogs would probably all die out pretty quickly in the colder regions (more susceptable to colds and pneumonia and the like), but they might be able to hold thier own closer to the equator.

I imagine there would be a lot of crossbreeding and eventually the breeds would only differentiate by region.

there is a standard feral type seen all over the world...

dogs with thick coats that matt would die...poodles, shih-tzus...

small "ratter" terrier types would do quite well maybe...but they would lose out to the larger dogs eventually in competition for food.

large breeds are too heavy on fuel to be viable + their joints don't last well.

you'd end up with the canaan dog basically.

i've thought about this before...does it show?

The Dingo is of course a pretty good example of a feral dog. Smart, dependable, cute, loves babies and small children.

zackly! dingos & canaan dogs...different continents but strikingly alike.

Suspect overall survival of different dog breeds will likely depend on whether they were breeds which happened by nature or if they were breeds which only exist because humans did basic genetic engineering through selective breeding.

That's an interesting theory. The world would definitely be going to the dogs, so to speak...

Well mine are neutered so they wouldn't be perpetuating the species anyway, but they'd die pretty quick I think. They are both dumber than a box of rocks.
