Paxil frequently does that.

Other SSRIs to try are Prozac and Zoloft.

Welbutrin has a different mechanism that SSRIs, which hopefully wouldn't make a difference to you. People also report much fewer problems with libido using it.

Both Prozac and Welbutrin are available generic.

I was on Wellbutrin for a while for smoking cessation, and it had absolutely no effect on my libido.

It did have a number of other effects though that absolutely killed me.... I was actually really emotional on it, crying a lot, and it made dealing with crowds of people very hard for me.

Wellbutrin SR is better, but...

I took Zoloft for a while and it worked OK, but I had some side effects that I cannot remember the details of right now, except for some libido-related ones. Overall it was OK. The main reason I switched was libido and insurance reasons.

I had tried two other's first and COULD NOT take them. They made me feel very ill, kinda nauseated and spaced out. That's why the doctor went to Zoloft, and had to write a special permission slip for me to get it.

I used Wellbutrin SR for a couple of years, on and off. I was supposed to take 2 pills a day, but I could only tolerate one. Taking 2 made me ill, which overode the benefits! I last took it in Jan/Feb/Mar to try to save a "good" job I had. It helped me, but no amount could have prevented the other problems (People there) that ended the job.
I did have some Constipation/Diarea type symtoms but it was something you just had to get used to. They did make me feel a little quezzy often and some other uneasy feelings, which is unsettling, so I decided to try taking care of my problems better, and/or drinking more.:)
NONO.

Paxil is infamous for killing the ability to orgasm in both men and women. Been there, done that. There's nothing as frustrating as not being able to orgasm despite stimulation that exceeds 30 minutes or more.

I don't suffer depression or social anxiety, but I'm prescribed this type of medication (an antidepressant in mild to medium doses) to boost my overall well-being because I live with chronic pain. The theory is that if the mind and body feels good, the amount of pain meds are reduced. It works. The alternative is more pain meds which contain a mild barbituate... which make me feel depressed if I have a really bad day.

Over the past few years, I've tried...

Zoloft More intense for me than Paxil. This was the first one the doctor had me try, and I had to discontinue it withing a few weeks of the perscription being issued. I felt completely warped while taking it, and not in a good way.

Paxil completely sucked. My eyes looked liked I was stoned while taking it, and it was way too intense for me. It made me feel high-strung like I was pumped full of caffeine, even nervous. All this and the inability to orgasm sent me back after 2 months to the doctor to ask for a different med.

Wellbutrin For pain management purposes, Wellbutrin (or Budeprion SR 150 in the generic form) has given the best results to date. This has proven to be the best drug for the reasons that I take it. No glossy eyes and big pupils. No nervousness or restless feelings. No sense of feeling warped in the mind and body. The prescription says that I can take 2 per day, but I most often take a half in the morning and early evening. When I take a dose, I feel a little giddy at first, but feel calm and good in general after the initial giddiness wears off after a half hour or so.

I do sometimes experience very nasty heartburn when I take it without having food in my stomach, or when I have eaten a meal that is acidic... like tomato sauce on spaghetti for one. A quick dose of antacid fixes that quickly. There is one antacid that comes in the form of chewing gum (can't think of the name offhand) that I keep at home and in my purse for use when needed.

The upside is that Wellbutrin, for me, almost serves as a sexual enhancement when it comes to orgasms. I am able to have multiple orgasms normally. When on Welbutrin, I feel like could come all night and then some.

But for those that need antidepressants for normal reasons, chosing one over another because you can have an orgasm on this one or not on that one is NOT the reason to choose one drug over another.

The drug that helps you function the best in your own daily life is the one to choose. Depression is rarely a lifelong condition. You may not like some side-effects of one drug, but if it helps you through your depression to the point where you can function in the everyday world again, you're back on track towards living a normal life again. The meds can be switched as you progress back toward that place where you feel good inside of your own skin once again.

If you truly need meds for depression, please find something that works for you.

Took Welbutrin to stop smoking. Went on for a week stopped, tried it again for a week & had to stop. Tried it one more time and had to give it up. I had bad diareah and cried all the time. I couldn't even take a shower by myself because I would cry. Making a long drive into work resulted in red eyes and smudged makeup. I would just bawl and bawl and bawl after about day 3 on the stuff.

Busy - pick the one that won't make you any more paranoid than you already are? Please? For our sakes.

Despite the rightwing stuff in your sig line (or maybe in the hopes that the right antidepressant will have an affect on your political views ;) ) here's my experience: Wellbutrin unfortunately had no affect on my depression but was Great for my orgasms! Made them much stronger, to the point of being somewhat uncomfortable. Kinda of juttery, if that makes any sense. I've actually considered taking Wellbutrin again, just to get the strong orgasm side-effect back!

Problem is, you have to use what works for what ails you, and causes the fewest side-effects, and everyone seems to be very different in this regard.

Best of luck. It's worth a try, anyway. :rose:

Ummm, can't tell you a thing about Wellbutrin but don't kick Paxil without a partner in sight because the rebound libido is completely insane for a week or two before you settle back down to your baseline.

One I nearly forgot about. Limbitrol, the med that was first prescribed to me nearly 10 years ago (by a neurologist) to 'aid' with pain management. That antidepressant that made me swear off taking them for over 8 years.

Limbitrol made me so lethargic that I had a terrible time staying awake at work and functioning as a single parent. I mean drop dead tired, no energy, hard to motivate myself to do anything. Sexual side effects? I was too tired to even notice.

What really scared the heck out of me was the effects of this antidepressant when combined with alcohol. Antidepressants make you feel good, and it's all too easy to ignore the warning on the side of the pill bottle to not drink alcohol while taking the medication.

Back during the Limbitrol days, I had some friends over one night, and we had a couple of drinks each. I literally passed out at the table after they left about 9 pm, and woke up in a drugged stupor about 4 am. The apartment could have burned down and I'd never have even noticed.

Please be careful if you drink while taking antidepressants, and never drive if you've mixed the two.
