Inspired by Svenska's thread (about applying for an unpaid job doing work she enjoys) I thought about some of my own if-only work fantasies.

If money didn't matter, what would be your ideal work? Or would you work at all? Many of you would probably prefer to write full-time. Assume that you could continue writing in any case; what else would you do?

My two main contenders, top of mind, are:

~ Restaurant reviewer for Islands magazine.

~ Own and operate a home for abused and abandoned animals, in a gorgeous setting like Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah. They rescue, rehabilitate and find homes for horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, eagles, llamas, potbelly pigs and at least one well-mannered rat; they work with programs for children and the handicapped to provide riding lessons and other beneficial interaction with animals; and they have a spectacular view of Zion National Park. For this, I'd be willing to give up the job with Islands magazine...probably.

(Of course, I could always send generous donations to animal sanctuaries from my hotel suite on Bora Bora. But there goes the "if money didn't matter" part of the equation. Damn. Life is complicated.)
 
I'd buy a school in Florida training people how to vote for the "right" candidate, whether they want to vote for the "right" candidate or not. ;)
 
In my spare time (visits to the U.S. from my offices in French Polynesia, to check on my animal sanctuary in Montana) I might fund a clinic for Literotica pornsters with issues.

When I'm rich I won't have issues. I'll just be eccentric.

If I came into a ton of money, I would first pay off my debts, by a semi-lavicious home, the car I want, take care of my familly and friends, then I would hire someone to find people with rare and obscure diseases that could not afford their medical bills and take care of them.
Gee, that makes me sound almost compassionate...can't have that, I have a reptutation to uphold......hmmm.

Scratch that, I would buy Iraq, kick everyone the fuck out and put in a bunch of Wal-mart super centers.

Interesting. The Super WalMart approach to foreign policy! You should contact Kissinger.

Edited to add: I like your idea of funding medical care for people with rare diseases...On a more realistic level, if I just got out of debt and had my house paid for ("realistic" in an alternate universe), I'd like to start an organization that provides in-home pet care for elderly people who are no longer able to walk their dogs, clean the litter box, etc. A lot of shelter animals are there because their owners were forced to part with them, because of an illness or disability. Just having someone to visit twice a day and take the dog to the vet once a year would make such a difference...Of course, there are old people in Tahiti, too, and I'm sure some of them will need me to take their dogs to the beach.)

I've already got my ideal job. I sit in my secondhand bookshop surrounded by thousands of books and write erotica.

I don't make any money but who cares? I'm my own boss. I open when I want to and meet people who like books. Some of them even BUY books.

I've got my ideal job. I make stuff look good (I'm an art director). I do something that is creative, stimulating and fun, something that I'm good at, and that I'm proud as hell of.

If I had tons of money, I'd still be working, but cut down on hours. Then I'd spend some on me and the family (house, new car, no debts, toys, clothes, a fucking big television), save some for rainy days, and then give the rest to a drug rehab clinic in Olso, whose underpaid and overworked staff saved my life on more occations than I care to remember.

And I'd offer a reward for someone who could come up with an effective diet that still tastes like real food. :rolleyes:
 
I would move to Venice and write full-time after helping out my family and friends (maybe move them to Venice too). I would hire people to help others, especially supporting the arts. I wouldn't necessarily give much money to artists and companies (e.g., opera, ballet cos.), but I'd promote the arts among children and others who could not afford them (e.g., give away season tickets to the opera, symphony, ballet; give museum memberships). I'd also provide people with gift certificates to independent book stores. Stuff like that. Perhaps bring the arts to invalids or hospitals. There is not enough recognition of beauty in the world, I'd like to promote beauty and creativity.

Well ... I really think I would just find me a nice place, where I could write all day long. Do what the heck I want, without having to worry about money ...

Maybe I would open a nice little restaurant or a bookstore or something, just for the fun of it. So I kinda envy you ogg ...

Maybe I would try to produce movies ...

A composer and sound designer. Right now, it can only be a hobbyist with this stuff.
 
This sounds more like 'what would you do if you were rich'.

If I were rich, I would buy a sailboat and sail around the world, stopping for a year or so in Europe for a bicycle tour of famous battlefields. (Sedan, Normandy, Arnhem, Waterloo, Austerlitz… oh,oh Kursk and Stalingrad!)

If I had to work, bar reviewer for a world renowned magazine. With the occasional stop off in peeler bars and brothels.

And then I would write about it.

FUN!

And btw ... I have decided I would probably just continue to study, read every book I can get a hold of and simply gain knowledge for the heck of it ...

And I'd write a book or two ... :)

Then open a bookstore and teahouse in a cabin in Norway. Then travel there and write about it.



If i had enough to get by I would...
...either write plays and produce and/or direct them for fun and for free...
...or get real piano and singing lessons, to go from Almost Decent to Quite Good. Then try to pursue a music career...
...or get an ocean sailer and see the world.


If I was filthy rich I would...
...dunno really. Buy Utah?

Just so happens we have a position opening, I do mean opening.

I just need to see some references. You know we get all kinds of freaks applying for this kind of stuff. Eight hour days good for you? Of course there is all the overtime you can handle.



Oh to stay on topic. I have just landed my ideal job, moderating amature pictures that females want to post on the internet. Yup no retirement plan. I am not worried I will gladly work now till I die.

I would post a link but Laurel wouldn't like that. Truely amazing I never thought I could enjoy work so much.
