Tech Question: Modem or ISP Trouble

Since I'm pretty computer illiterate any help from you techno gods out there would be appreciated.

I'm having a problem when I'm online where my internet connection just seems to stop working. If I click on a link or try to refresh a page all I get is that stupid "cannot find page" or "a connection could not be established".

If I disconnect and redial, all is well again until the same thing happens. Sometimes it's takes ten minutes, other times an hour or two. The little dialog box says I'm sending bytes, but I don't receive any in return. This used to happen occasionally, but now its a several times a day occurrence.

Does this mean my modem is dying or is it more likely a problem on my ISP's (Earthlink) end?

Thanks,
BirdsWife

Ok, I don't know much, but...first of all, are you using a dial up or DSL or what?

It could be hard to tell, but I would suspect the ISP. Does this happen at a certain time of day?

A new modem is very cheap - some go for under $20, you could try a new modem and see if that helps, if not then it is the ISP or your phone line.

You might want to check also that you don't have call-waiting/etc. turned on while surfing; these "features" can screw up your connection.

If you have a cable modem, try refreshing it. I have to do that to mine about once a month or I have the same thing happen.

I was having a problem today - very similar, anyway. I finally had to "reset" the modem. I'm using DSL, so I'm not sure that applies to you.

All is well now!

It's a plain old dial-up.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern as far as the time of day it happens.

I guess I can always crawl under the desk and hook up my laptop to that line to find out whether or not it is the modem.

My guess would be your ISP. Earthlink sucks pile-ridden rump. Unless you live in a rinky-dink community, you shouldn't have a problem finding a locally owned and operated dialup to move to. Or switch to cable or DSL. (Skip earthlink, they suck).

You can give 'em a call if you don't mind the hold for hours routine and find out if they're messing around with stuff in your area.

A lot of companies, like Earthlink, AOL, etc. contract with local ISPs to provide them with local numbers and modem centers - so it is very likely she is already going through a local ISP anyway.

I am so glad I am on cable now - even satellite was better than dialup, but now no more interruptions, resetting the modem (dialup or satellite), waiting for software to load or having conflicts between their software and mine.

It's possible. I've had earthlink DSL for four months now. It's gone down five times for hours when I needed it to work the most. I had cable for two years and the only outage I experienced happened in the middle of a thunderstorm when the electricity wasn't working either. We got a phone call.

I'm trying to decide if the hundred bucks to ditch them is worth it. I'm leaning very strongly on the "yes".

I will second this motion. Odds are not that the modem disconnects, but rather the ISP disconnects you.

How long are you normally online for, before this happens? I know a few ISP's have a refresh time limit. Pain in the ass, but true.

Go for DSL

msn did that shit to me until i turned it off. now i can let it sit idle while i go get a drink, smoke and then take a piss. it's such a wonderful feeling.

I'm in a rural area of the Chicago suburbs. Going cable isn't an option because the cable company won't run the lines out here for just one house.

Even if it were possible I'd have a difficult time switching just because of the email address alone. I'm signed up at about a hundred different sites for my business, and I'm too lazy to go change all that.

Thanks for the tips, though. Guess I'll just put up with it.

I sometimes have a similar problem and sometimes it's my ISP that is down, but usually it's something in the interconnection between IE5.5 and the modem.

The way I can tell which is messed up, is that I can usually load the ISP's home page and check mail with Outlook if it's the ISP's connection to the web.

If I can't load the ISP's home page but can check mail it's IE5.5 not talking to the modem properly.

If I can't do either, it's the ISP that's down completely.

Your problem sounds like your ISP isn't talking to the internet properly.

Your modem sounds like it's fine, although you might check the manufacturers website for an update to the FlashROM -- my modem improved a great deal when I loaded the upgrade that was available.

If you can go back to cable then I recommend it. The only advantage I know with some DSL service is that they sometimes allow you to have a server process locally, so you can serve up a website, run a mail servr etc. without paying a host to do it for you. As long as you don't have much traffic this is okay - otherwise paying a host who has a backbone connection is going to be superior if more costly.

I've only been with Comcast for less than a week, but so far the speed has been as advertised (1.5 mbps/256kbps) and that is superior to most DSL setups I have tried, and it is even superior to what we have at work (T1?) although that is shared.

I had some initial setup problems, especially with sending email, but their tech support stuck it out and we finally solved them. I can maybe (not available everywhere) even upgrade to 3.5mbps/384kbps for $40 per month - but right now 1.5 mbps is plenty fast enough.
