Macy's removes gay pride display


BOSTON - Macy's department store has removed a window display marking Boston's gay pride week after a group that opposes gay marriage complained it was offensive.

The display at the downtown Boston store featured two male mannequins, with one wearing a gay pride rainbow flag around his waist, next to a list of several planned Boston Pride Week events.

MassResistance, formerly the Article 8 Alliance, which has campaigned against gay marriage and gay-themed textbooks in public schools, objected to the display and said the mannequin wearing the flag had a "skirt" on, the Boston Herald reported.

The group posted pictures on its Web site and scores of its supporters complained to Macy's by phone and e-mail.

Elina Kazan, a Macy's spokeswoman, said the store decided to remove the mannequins but leave the list of events in order to strike a balance. Displays in previous years did not use mannequins.

"We believe in diversity, and our customers are very important to us," Kazan said. "But (the display) did offend a few of our customers, and we had to re-examine it.

ACLU of Massachusetts spokeswoman Sarah Wunsch criticized Macy's for "succumbing to the bigotry" of what she said was a fringe anti-gay group.

and technically mannequinns have no genitalia. They are sexless. Shame.

I know I won't be writing learning material for them anytime soon.... Then again maybe if they did a bit of diversity training it would make a difference?

I am protesting the use of children's mannequins as they may attract pedophiles...then female mannequins that may attract rapists and perverts...and Halloween displays because of Pagans and devil worshippers...and non-caucasian mannequins because they will attract Klansmen...and camping gear because I don't like camping.

Some do, some don't and some are very androgynous, I worked with them for years.

Oh, sure, Samandiriel, "worked with them". Never socialized with them though, did you? Never invited them to one of your parties, did you? Probably say that you treat them just like all your other coworkers, don't you?

I know the type, you'd probably would be horrified if you brother was dating one, brought one home to meet Mom and Dad. And the Goddess forbid he might think of marrying one, assuming the laws of this "Free" land of ours allowed such a thing.

Barbie doesn't have a pussy - she barely has a pelvis (detachable legs, anyone?). She also has completely unrealistic tits for her body. And I've never heard of Barbie being sexual at all - she dates Ken (or whoever her latest flame is) but she doesn't do the horizontal mambo.

It's too bad Macy's didn't have the balls Victoria's Secret did. Here in the Tyson's Corner mall, in northern Virginia just outside DC, the Victoria's Secret store was renovated. When they reopened, they had mannequins dressed like and posing like erotic dancers. It was all over the local news - OMG PLASTIC PEOPLE EXUDING SEXUALITY! It really was kind of raunchy, that was clearly the intent. A lot of people chided the store and demanded that they take down/change the displays. VS said "no thanks" and stuck to their guns; to this day (this was maybe a year ago) they have one or two still posed/dressed in a more raunchy way than people would like. I made sure to stop by during the controversy and tell them I supported them, and they confirmed they weren't going to bow to the pressure.
