Finger-pointing and screaming, they have already assessed blame. Disasters bring out the worst of people be it the looting of these low on the social-economic level or the political impatience of those engaged in a now five-year old vendetta. I believe there is a time and place in a dignified setting to ask the hard, tough questions and ascertain what went wrong, if anything, in this current operation. This is merely the time to ask, “What can I do? Who can I help? Of what benefit can I be to my society and nation?”

I see a lot of people throwing temper tantrums and acting in a childish manner even for the political mudslinging that passes for debate on issues. I am not pointing fingers at anyone on the world stage or some other poster that I am not mentally fortified enough to challenge, but I think we all have an idea of who some of these people are.

Thanks

There is a time and place for everything and I think most people are doing the right thing.

I just wanted to say I loved the Matrix, one of my all time favorite movies.

Yes, truth is stranger than fiction, there are more things that go on under the sun than can be seen with the eye.

Being on a computer in an online world, is like a masquerade ball to me. Only worse because the people are completey anonymous. You can't even hear their voice or see part of their face.

That's it. You get the residual self-image and there are a lot of people here that are ugly to the bone despite what they may post in the AM pics when they are sure they're hot...

;) ;)

I totally agree, and they don't have to be posting in the Am pic's either. True beauty comes from within. I wrote a poem about it actually. Ugly inside is forever.

I"m not hot, I think overall I'm attractive, not to everyone but still. I have physical things that are beautiful and some not so much. Inside, I'am all beautiful. :)

Ahm GORGEOUS!!!

Through and through.

There goes yet another, brand-spanking new, I hate George W. Bush* thread as if the poster feels his/her hatred is uniquely distinct from their brethern in the herd.

* Number-wise, he's the most popular guy on Lit. Well, at least the most discussed/disgust...

Thank you :)

LOL.. yes, there have been a lot of those, and very similar threads. Really? I had no idea that he was the most discussed person. You have a fish pond don't you? I've talked with you before but you change your name a lot I think and then I'm not sure if its you.

My body is not my greatest asset, but like I said over all I'm alright. I'm 43 and the wrinkles are not showing up in the pic the way they do in the sunlight. I think its whats inside that counts the most anyway.

Most people don't understand the United States' system of government. They think the President runs everything, so if something is fucked up, it's the President's fault.

These are the common people. The people of the land. You know, morons.

I have a Koi pond.
I have a saltwater aquarium.
I have a freshwater aquarium.
I have a Beta in a bowl.

Only one of the above was my idea, but they are all my responsibility because I AM one of those morons! And, cause Ahm forty-Ish too :D I vote dagnabbit!

Oh yes, so it was you. You dug up the koi pond yourself right? I used to have an aquarium when I was married, it was his thing really but I enjoyed it. Those salt water fish die easily. They are lovely though, very relaxing to watch them.

No, it's concrete and it came with the place. The lady that sold it to us said it even had fish in it.

Well, it did. As soon as the first warm dry days of Spring arrived, the ice thawed, all the water leaked out and then the dead fish could finish their decompostition. But then nothing else here worked for long, if at all either...

So we lined it this Spring and got filters and pumps and the sound of running water fills the gardens that surround it. We have maccas (hammocks) and benches, places to sit and meditate. It's really neat.

O.k, I now you lined it, but for some reason I thought you dug it up. Maybe I'm mixing you up with someone else, another litster with a koi pond? hmmm.. do you work in the medical field? Its hard to remember, talking to so many people here.

It sounds absolutely amazing. Wish I lived closer I'd be wanting an invitation. I could use a beautiful place to just relax at. Ohhhh and a hammock for those lazy relaxing summer days. :)

You have to have seen Blazing Saddles.

Oh, but that was years ago... One damned funny movie. Hope I see it in a cheap bin somewhere.

In the clearing stands a fighter and a Bauxer by his trade...

I got a PM in the middle of the night from someone who is going to pack up and go down there and help.

I hope she is careful and wish her all the best. When Andrew decimated Homestead and other South Florida areas, there was not nearly the death toll that we are finding in New Orleans.

We took a Prentice loader and a tree crew down there and worked up one side of the streets and down the other, as you cant start drying in rooftops and fixing shit until the trees are yanked out of the living rooms.

In that case, Insurance Company adjustors were running up and down streets writing checks all day to good ole crackers like me and my crew. We were literally offered hundreds of dollars on the spot to use the loader truck and remove smallish trees that would take us 15 minutes. I couldnt help but feel that we were inadvertantly gouging the big bad insurance companies. Soon however, engineer types found that the building codes had been circumvented intentionally and passes were given to companies that slapped those homes up with only 4-6 joist hangers in roof assemblies, when the law called for 20-30.

The citizens were, by and large, extremely friendly and nice. I Never drank so much "Sweet Tea" in my life. Porta potties were in high demand. Some companies from up north stayed in the area for nearly a year, but we got the hell out after the big work was done and the graft and fraud was exposed. I smelled a rat and wanted nothing to do with all the shenanigans going on. Guys in pickups with chain saws were clearing 2-3 thousand bucks a day for quite a while. With a large loader, you could make double that.

New Orleans is so much different than that. I hope our friend can be of some help if she goes, which, I bet she does.

Our area is sending a medical team as part of a statewide mobilization and my wife has volunteered to go. Because she is high up in the food chain, she may have to stay if they can't cover her position. Either way, she'll be putting in a buttload of hours and a lot of hard work.

I wish some of our more impatient friends understood how long it takes to mobilize an army, even a "salvation" army...

;) ;)

Question for you-

Are there ANY National Guard units available in Louisiana or Mississippi, etc?

I know the lion's share of them must be overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan.

But sheesh, you'd think some would still be stateside, and available to assist in
shoring up levees and helping with the distribution of water and food. I havent heard a definitive answer to that question yet. You got any hunch re: that?

There are plenty of National Guard troops, in state, and available for loan from others.

What people don't get is that the scope of the disaster, in the first days it will be like a huge black star that sucks in everything in its orb to no appearant effect. Soon, a difference will be seen and soon the hard part, harvesting and counting the dead will begin and that will further fuel the schools of irrational thought and blame gaming that we see going on now.

When the story is told in the long-run after extensive fact-finding, I don't think it will be about the breakdowns as much as the heroism that it took to launch and sustain the relief effort. At this point, I certainly don't know if restoration is possible or even desired.

Thanks for the heads up on that query.

I, for one, cant see how blame gaming can apply in the event of natural disasters.
I do understand why local citizenry may be up in arms regarding lack of drinking water. It seems that supermarkets and trucking firms could get together and deliver gallon sized water bottles to the affected areas. Cant Fema allocate monies for such a no-brainer procedure? Doesnt a presidential decree of "state of emergency" free up money for just that sort of thing. I understand that it takes time to mobilize the more intricate repair and reclamation processes. But, jayzuz keerist, drinking water? I dont get that one at all.

What a bunch of shit.

You Republicans got your panties in a twist because Bill Clinton lied about a blow job.

You impeached the guy.

Now you have a president who is running the country into the ground and you don't want anyone to say anything about it?

This guy should be shot. Not killed, just take out enough motor function so that he spends the rest of his days in a wheel chair like that corpse in a wheel chair we saw at the New Orleans Convention Center.

I want to see this bastard drool.

I predict this is going to be the most popular stocking stuffer this Christmas:

Good morning all.

It's flooded, it's raining, people are shooting and looting, the mayor won't issue shoot-to-kill orders. If you just drive into the city willy-nilly you become part of the problem because the roads in and out of New Orleans suck under the very BEST of circumstances. I'm not saying maybe things could have happened sooner. We don't know. It's too early to know what happened or if anything did indeed go wrong in our response. I just know that logistics is an artform that has underdone many an incompetent general.

I do know Sean Hannity had a friend with a bus company and they filled several bus loads and had them driven down, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to the scope of the need.

I know water was getting down there, just not enough...
