Hello all again. In discussing things with my girlfriend again today, I have two new questions to pose to all you g-spot gurus.

1) I read a while back, probably on Lit somewhere...that one should test a condom after sex. You fill it up with water, and if it leaks, then you ought to get some form of 'morning after' pill, because there's a chance semen might've leaked too, and could cause pregnancy. Has anyone here used this method, and how reliable is it? Does any water out of a used condom, filled in this method, automatically = get the morning after pill quick?

2) On the subject of said MAP...how compatible is it with the combination BC pill? My Amy is on the combo BC pill now, and if the need arose for an emergency contraceptive...she wants to know what, if any, adverse side affects would come with it.

Thanks a bunch!

I've never tried the water thing, but it seems reasonable that if water is leaking out, you may have torn the condom, but usually you can see the tear in a condom without needing water. If you have reason to think the condom is torn, she should certainly call her doctor's office and see what they advise.

BC pills and morning after pills are pretty much the same thing. The hormones are the same; you're just taking a bigger dose in a concentrated amount of time. Her doctor is the best one to really say what kind of side effects she might experience.

If she's on BC pills and she's taking them regularly and you're using condoms, the likelihood of getting pregnant is pretty small.

Errr... I've never done this thing about water. I think safety is very important, all right, all right, but condoms wouldn't be so popular if they selfexploded that often. Unless you are very careless, you shouldn't break them. And do you mean you'd actually want to do this little ritual after every time you have had sex ? Condoms are already hard enough to use in my opinion...

About the pills, she has to ask her gynecologist next time she sees him.

A quick word on the Morning After Pill...

I've been to seminars on safe sex, and this was one of the topics covered. The MAP is not a pleasant thing to have to take. Generally it causes nausea, vomitting, heavy bleeding, and severe cramping... and those are only the most common symptoms. It should not be used as a "quick fix" as it can be potentially dangerous to a woman's health. It can also have a negative effect on one's fertility. I have an aunt who used it when she was in college, and was unable to have children later in life. Her doctor told her that taking the MAP could very well have been the cause.

I don't mean to scare you, but I've heard too many women talking about how they don't need to really worry about having safe sex - they could endulge in a night of pleasure and just take the MAP and everything would be alright. It's not that simple - they call it the emergency contraceptive for a reason. It should only be used if there's an actual emergency. Don't take it if you're not 100% positive whether your condom ripped, and don't think you can forgo regular contraception and just take the MAP to make up for it.

You have to understand, we're both extremely horny, and extremely paranoid. So while the condom water thing might be tedious or something...there's a part of me that would much rather do that after every time, and know it didn't bust or w/e...than to assume it didn't, and have her wind up pregnant.

Lynxie - The MAP would only be a last resort, if we think the condom has been compromised during sex. We're not planning to forego anything. I personally don't believe in doing that anyway, so don't worry about that :)

I understand your paranoia - i am 38 yo and have 3 kids and I don't want anymore - ever.

I have had my tubes clamped and take the pill primarily to regulate my cycle but it is great to know I have the extra protection.

When I found out the wonderful man in my life had been circumised I was overjoyed.

I have no desire to have another pregnancy and completely understand your paranoia - but if you have birth control pills and condoms on your side then you should be fairly safe.

You know I might be young and not have the life experience of most people but it seems to me that if you want to see if the condom leaks wouldn't the best indicator be if there's any sperm left in it, I mean that would be the biggest indicator for me if there were any on the actual outside of the condom.

OK, here is what you need to do, go to the drug store and buy a big tube of spermicidal jelly. Gynol or something, even availible in extra-strenght...

Anyway aply libraly, inside the condom, outside, in the girl, wherever. This combination alone (condoms with spermicide used correctly) is close to 100% with the BC pills you will only get knocked up if GOD wants you too ;)

Also have her suck you off a few times to drain your balls, less semen = less babies. If shes that horny you might want to consider only cumming in her mouth, however the spermicide tastes like shit.

BTW i think you are being overly paranoid. consider the possiblity of an abortion, and if that freaks you out then maby you shouldnt be fucking around.

Her and I talked about it last night, and if she gets pregnant, we're parents. Simple as that. No other option is acceptable to her.

Now I hope you understand my/our paranoia ;)

Hm spermicidal lube sounds like a good idea, we had a scare once with the condom coming off and neither of us noticing it. Got the morning after pill so there was no problem but I'm still looking for a birth control method (hormonal ones are out for certain reasons).

I'm curious...how does a man's circumcision, or lack thereof, relate to birth control?

Oh i deffinatly understand the disire not to get knocked up. Just ask your doctor what the chances of becomecoming pregnant while using the BC pills condom/spermicide combo.

i dont think that circumcision has anything to do with birth-control. Im personaly happy to be cut, the idea of smegma is less then apealing.

Do you think she meant vasectomy instead of circumcision?

Good thought...one I didn't think of because I'd think if I'd had a tubal, I wouldn't worry about it enough to care if he had a vasectomy. But I guess double-insurance never hurts, eh? :)

New Question

Alright, my girlfriend is on the combination pill, as has been mentioned...and she just got to the 7 day stretch where she's not supposed to take the pill...and she says she's supposed to start her period again. It's been two days, and she has not yet begun. She wishes to know how common this is from other users. The literature she got with it says it is possible to miss a period, among other things, for first time users. She would like to know how common this is among other women.

Annnd she wants to know if she should keep waiting if she doesn't period.

The exact pill she's on is Logynon, fyi.

It's very common. Even when I had been on the pill for years, sometimes I didn't start until the fourth or fifth day. Have her call her doctor, a pharmacist, or family planning clinic if she's concerned. :)

Cannot possibly agree more. After Prozac, the MAP is the worst drug I've ever had to take, I don't think I've ever felt so sick in my life. Best avoided at all costs!

For me it never came before the second or third day. It was very light and only lasted about 4 days.

How long has she been on the pill? When does she usually get her period after she stops? It takes a month or two, sometimes longer, for your body to get used to the dosage and settle into its particular rhythm.

If she's been on it a while, and this has never happened before, she should call the doctor and see what she says.

She just started the pill about...the 7th or so of this month, so it's pretty new. She's never taken it before.

Thanks. I'll tell her in our nightly email :)

Ah, now I see, she hasn't quite completed a full month cycle of BC pills yet!

In addition to condoms, you might also want to look into the sponge (back out on the market after a few years back in research) - it is a combination barrier/spermacide to complement the condom with spermacide.

Again, no BC method is 100% foolproof, except not getting involved parts closer than the proverbial 10 foot pole.

The few times I have been on the pill - the first time (early 20's) really screwed up my previous "arriving on time" clockwork (ended up not needing them after all as the friend I had started taking them in order to be with was at a different college and our plans to get together fell through.

The second time I took them was for regulation (mid 30's) (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, without the cysts) - but even the low dose ones gave me horrible leg cramps after a couple of weeks.

I plan on having female condoms (latex free and less likely to "break" since they aren't skin tight) and sponges handy if I ever get to that point with anyone again.

She really should make her own account for this, but I'm still playing messenger, so...;)

My girlfriend said:
What i should do if i miss this period completely? do i just wait the seven days out, then start pack two regardless? and if, say, i get my period on day 5 out of 7 - do i still start the next pack on day 7, or do i wait for the end of the period before starting it?

Ladies, your help is greatly appreciated ^_^

She should start taking the next set of pills when she is scheduled, even if her period started late and she still has it, or even if she misses it completely.

I know the pill has changed over the years, but when I took them, they told me to use a back-up form of birth control during the first month. It's good that you've been using a condom, because it takes at least a full cycle before the hormones have a chance to get to the right levels to be effective.

If she doesn't get her period at all and you think you may have had an accident with the condom, she should get in touch with her doctor or take a home pregnancy test.

Ok, maybe it's time I clear a couple of things up ;)

She lives in the UK. I live in the States. We haven't met yet, but are planning on it very soon.

Consequently, we haven't had sex yet. She's on the pill because we plan on plenty of sex when I go visit her. She wanted to make sure she was well protected, by giving her time to get used to the Pill, and to make sure it had had enough time to be effective.

So, we don't need any pregnancy tests or anything...because we haven't had sex yet :)

When taken properly the birth control pill is over 99% effective. If you're combining that with condoms, it really does take an act of god to result in pregnancy.

Anecdotal evidence isn't always the best, but here's my story: I lived with a girl for over a year after dating her for a good while. She HATED condoms, and went on the pill well before we started having sex. She regularly missed a pill, or took it late. She never got pregnant, and we had a lot of sex.

Pregnancy certainly isn't something to be taken lightly, but if you're using pills and condoms, I wouldn't worry.

Aren't these things her Gyno is supposed to go into great detail about? I mean my girlfriend goes to Planned parenthood who I wouldn't even expect to be the top of the line place and when she tries a new method she come home and could tell me when it was created, the percentage of risk from smoking, the percentage failure rate, the potential risks and about a million other things. Do you have to go out of your way to ask these questions? Shouldn't your Gyno force as much down your throat as you can stomache?
