Television is on in the backgroud and just heard a report that a teacher's union in the UK has advocated changing euphemisms for bad grades. Apparently students will no longer fail a subject, only have defered success.

Is that followed by a defered job and a defered paycheck?

...lol...It's supposed to make them feel better about themselves, knowing that they did not fail, just that success will come later.

You mean they actually advocated it? How moronic. People need to learn that yes there are things you will fail at, and it's often GOOD for you, particularly if you are more suited to a different path or lifestyle but you keep banging at the chosen one because the success has only been 'deferred'.

I suppose it's a nice change that this isn't coming from some asinine North American "educator"/"child psychologist".

In some ways I can see where this can be better for their self esteem. But, doesn't this set them up for unrealistic expectations for when they get into the real world? A boss isn't going to be gentle and say "Hey, you are deferred fired, okay?" Next week I want you coming in only 4 days a week, then the next 3 days and so on until finally you aren't coming in at all. This will give you time to look for a new job.

I mean at some point they have to learn to deal with reality and take action to either improve or accept the consequences.

Hey, it is very unfair of you to claim all the asinine stuff for North America.
WE have some very fine examples of the art which will hold their own anywhere in the world.

Yeah, the molly coddling needs to stop at a younger age for sure.

The more important reality people have to grasp is that the definition of average automatically makes half of us losers, so there is a lot of self esteem killed off by the system of grading people before you even get to personal achievement abilities.

Soft soaping lower performers is a cruel deciet of what the real world has in store when often, a good kick in the ass inspires concentration and changes the results.

Such a comforting thought!

I think it all comes down to the fact that creating good self-esteem for persons, young or old, is not about making them feel perky all the time. We've lost sight of that and now it's about making everybody feel good, however superficially.

Learning is a developmental thing of expanding your horizons and learning from your mistakes. Our inbuilt self judgemental system is sometimes more brutal than that of outside critics and setting realistic but challenging goals is where guidance is helpful. It is when you succeed in those conditions, you can feel pleased with your performance., not when the bar is lowered too far.

Didn't Beckett say something like, "Artists always fail" and shit like that?

"To be an artist is to fail, as no other dares fail...."
- Beckett

I knew I was an artist.
