Calling all us ladies of a certain age.....what symptoms did you get that first indicated that your body was starting to go through the first stages of menopause?

I am a couple of months off turning 46 and over the last couple of years my periods have been getting skewed. I had a tubal ligation in 1999 and went off the pill straight after. My periods immediately settled in to a 21 day cycle  They were normal, if a little heavy for the first couple of days. They gradually got heavier though, and last year I had a lot of stress and I missed 3 cycles, and when I did get my period it lasted 10 days and was extremely heavy with flooding and clots. I went to the doctor and he sent me for a vaginal ultrasound which showed nothing abnormal, so he put me back on the pill (a low dose combined one) for a while to regulate me. I did get another heavy one the next month but when the pills kicked in everything seemed fine.

I moved to Australia 6 months ago and my prescription ran out 3 months later. I thought I would try going without it to see what happened. I got a very light period the next month which kept spotting on and off for a couple of weeks, then nothing for over 2 months. I went to a doctor here and got another prescription last week, and wouldn't you know it I got my period yesterday. It is looking like being another very heavy one. I have started the prescription this morning and it looks like I will need to be on these indefinitely so that I don't get the flooding problem. The official diagnosis is "dysfunctional uterine bleeding".

I have no other symptoms, no hot flashes or itchy skin or vaginal dryness  My mother had a total hysterectomy in her early 40s so I have no idea at what age she would have started menopause naturally. The doctor back in NZ did blood tests and they were all in the normal range. All pap smears have been normal too.

I guess I just want reassurance that there are other ladies going through the same thing......:rose:

my mom just turned 46 this year. She started the whole deal about 3 years ago. It started out with the same types of things that you're describing are happening to you. However, after awhile she did get the hot flashes (we were all glad she got those in the middle of winter) and some of the other stuff that came along with it. My mom kind of had issues with taken birth control pills and ended up having to get a dnc (I think that's what it is) done on two different occasions. She takes soy pills now and some other vitamins to help keep her system straight.

It sounds to me like you're starting the menopause thing. Just stay calm and do some reading if you want a lot more info about it.

All these wonderful things have been happening to me too, Bandit. I just turned 50, and I still have a period every six weeks or so, but the nature of them has changed quite a bit over the last couple of years. One'll be heavy, then the next one light, that sort of thing. A very good friend of mine, who is 6 months younger than I am, hasn't had a period at all in almost a year. So it's different for everybody I guess.

I've also experienced mild hot flashes, particularly at night. Drives Hub crazy when I complain about how freaking HOT it is. Sleep disturbances, and forgetfulness, and some vaginal dryness bother me too.

But on the upside (thank God there is an upside!;) ), my sex drive has increased a lot in the past couple of years too. I hear some of the men posting here talking about the frustration of a having a wife who has very little interest--well, let's just say my husband will always have a willing partner.:D

Don't worry too much over it. You're in the prime of your life, and you have a man who is obviously crazy about you!:rose:

Thank you Willing and Unsure and bobsgirl for your replies :rose:

I guess I got so used to having no health worries that when something out of the ordinary happens I tend to freak out a bit  I definitely do not want to have to go to the emergency doctor like I did in NZ when I had that flooding - it scared me because I thought I was haemorrhaging and I felt sick and dizzy.

The doctor here sees no problem with me being on the pill as long as I do not smoke and get a pap smear every 2 years, and it fixed the problem before so hoping it works again.

Sex has never been better ;) and I'm so lucky to be with someone who loves me lots and who I love back just as much......

Remember when we were young and we thought 30 was old.......?? :D

I'm so glad you brought this up Bandit. I was just asking my neighbor about it - she has already gone through it and LMAO can't remember anything about the stages!! Big help she is and I know I'll be heading there too!

I got really ill a few years back and my periods stopped for almost a year. They returned quite irregularly but eventually got back on a normal cycle. Now I notice they are very heavy and a day or two longer then before.

Like you Bandit, that is the only "symptom" I seem to have. My doc says there is no ryhme or reason as we're all different but dang it would be nice to know something!

Isn't being a woman grand! lol

There is a really great book out about this subject entitled "The Wisdom of Menopause" by Christiane Northrup. She is an M.D., and I was very impressed with her when I saw her on Oprah awhile back.

I know you are in Australia, Bandit. Hope you can find it where you are.

And since it is nearly 2:30 am, I should get myself off to bed.

I have her first book - Woman's Body Woman's Wisdom. She is terrific. Here is a link to her site.

Thanks bobsgirl I will keep an eye out for that book, and now I live in Sydney with lots of cool shops :D there may be others too.

SSS when I had the heavy bleeding I was soaking through a super plus tampon and a pad every hour or two, no fun when you have to go to work as well. I'm sure the other girls I worked with were wondering what was going on! And having to get up and change (and shower) in the middle of the night....yuck! I also had backache as well as lower abdominal cramps, something I've never had before.

When I went to the emergency doctor (it was a Sunday) he gave me a prescription for some pills to slow the bleeding. I still have some so if it gets really bad I can take them (they did work and enabled me to function without having to be 5 steps from a loo!)

Ok girls - when I was 40 I started with the really heavy periods. Then I started having 2 a month. Then I started bleeding every time I had sex. (2-4 times a week) THEN I started bleeding every time I had an orgasm (ok at least once a day!) My gyno suggested this surgery, and dammit I can't remember what its called - but they singe the lining of your uterus.

They put you under, insert a 'balloon', fill it with scalding liquid and it singes your uterine lining. I now have a '2 mini pad' period a month. We're talking a day, day and a half. Since we boat and beach all the time it has really changed my life. Wish I could think of the name of the procedure though.... damn

I totally recommend you speak to your docs about it! Doesn't help with hot flashes or anything (I've only had 2 so far) but not having to worry about the constant bleeding (not to mention the cost of replacing ruined panties) is awesome.

I've heard of the procedure you're talking about crazy......my doc in NZ (who was wonderful btw, I miss him) mentioned that as one of the last resorts if things didn't settle with the pill. I don't mind taking it and it's possible to "rearrange" your schedule once in a while to fit in with holidays etc. I've only done that once however (when I came to Australia last year to meet Gil) and I remember my breasts were really tender by the end of the second pack of pills

From what I've read, skipping periods happens when you don't ovulate. But the lining keeps building up anyway, so by the time you do have a period you are virtually having two or three periods in one. Not nice. If taking a little pill once a day can fix that, then I'll do it for however long I need to! :)

hi bandit.i'm 46,had tubal ligation in my late 20's.after the ligation, periods do become somewhat heavier for most woman.mine have always been heavy, but got even worse,so i know what you mean.about 8yrs ago they started becoming very erratic.sometimes very heavy, but on occasion, almost nothing.i have not had a lot of big mood swings, but dont know if that was do to the fact that i was just finishing a very bad time in my life and had learned to be positive about almost anything.either that or i was just batty, and didn't realize it,but then what the hell,at least i'm happy.now the intolerance to heat,i understand! it got to be where i could not handle the california heat after living there for 40+yrs. i would be in a blizzard in wyoming wearing short sleeves and sweating(yes,i am serious).i am looking forward to winter here in ohio,if for nothing else, for the fact that i finally may get to wear sweaters again!i have never had a problem with vaginal dryness, can't see that ever happening.*snicker*at least you are aware of your body, for that is still unusual even in this day and age.many women are not.sounds like what you are experiencing is normal(at least to me).hang in there, your doing fine.most important is to stay positive about yourself, but then from reading your posts, you sure seem to be already. p.s.what brought on the move to australia?hope you don't mind my asking, but always wanted to pack it up and go either there or alaska.

Hi Jezebelle :)
LOL I certainly don't have a problem with vaginal dryness either, in fact I have become a gusher/squirter since I've been with Gil  ;)

I moved to Australia to live with Gil_T2, who I met here on Lit. We were friends for almost a year before my circumstances changed and we became much more, and after meeting him in Nov last year I decided to relocate. I've been here since Jan 24th. Speaking of heat it does get a lot hotter here in summer than in NZ, so the hot flashes could be a problem

then i guess i better consider northernmost alaska. hmmm, big burly men in skins....sounds kind of nice.wait a second, that was last night(dont i wish).

Okay, I'm 22 years old, and this sounds like the story of my life.. when I was 17, I had 9 day, VERY heavy periods.

For the last ... 6 months, I've been bleeding every time I have sex... for the last.. month or so, it's blood every time I orgasm, followed by HORRIBLE cramps, as well as spotting for weeks at a time.

And I'm on bloody Depo.

I decided to go off of it, so it's now been 5 days since my missed dose, and I have to say that my symptoms have IMPROVED, but are still there.

Fuck, I just can't wait till menopause. (that was sarcasm, by the way)

This is the second full day of bleeding (I didn't count Thursday because it started in the evening) and it is manageable this time thank god. I haven't had to take any of the "stop bleeding" pills either. I had cramps yesterday but they have eased today so once the contraceptive pill kicks in things should settle down.

Ms Lilith what does the doctor say about what's happening to you....it sounds like a bloody nightmare (no pun intended) :rose: I had bleeding after sex last year and I had a cervical erosion which cleared up after a course of antibiotics. It wasn't heavy, just spotting for a couple of hours afterwards and enough to be a damn nuisance.

Weird story.. on sunday night, I was admitted to emergency, cus I thought I'd slipped my disk in my back again, the back pain was so bad... while I was there, they determined that my back was basically fine (pinched muscle), but they discovered I had a fever of 103-104 and didn't know it. My white blood cells were up, and I was dizzy and nauseous (sp?), and I didn't know those things either, until I was laying on the stretcher...

On Wednesday, I went to my doc, and he took my temp, and it was still 102-103, so I've had an ultrasound of my pelvic region done, and I've now had two pelvic exams in one week *grumble*, and we've discovered that I have an infection in my uterus, left ovary, and bladder. We're not sure how I got it, but STDs have been ruled out (which I knew I wouldn't have anyway, as honey and I have been faithful for 3 years), so I'm on a REALLY strong cocktail of antibiotics for the next 10 days... which, because I'm a woman and oh so lucky, are going to give me a yeast infection, so he's prescribed a one-pill cure-all for yeast infections to take after the antibiotics are done.

I still have a fever hovering around 101, but I am feeling less shitty, and have been able to get out of bed and work for the last two days, and am going again today and tomorrow.. but I assure you, I can't wait until Monday, when I can just lay in bed and rest.

I personally think the infection was brought on by blood slowly building up over the last two years in my uterus (was on Depo, but as I'm heavy it's less effective), and now it's finally turned.. well.. infectious. *shrug* As long as the antibiotics make it go away, I'm happy.

Now that you mention it....the bleeding I had after sex was around the time between the first and second periods from hell, when the lining in my uterus had built up after I missed those three cycles. The antibiotics I was on were pretty strong ones too, and I suspect they interfered with the effectiveness of the pill which I had just started, causing that second heavy period that I ended up going to the emergency doc for.

Because I am older, the bleeding after sex was a scary symptom, even though I had had a clear pap smear the year before. When the doctor examined me he found that my cervix was inflamed. He took swabs and no STDs were found, and I was told not to use tampons for a couple of months just to make sure all infection was gone (oh yuck....I have always used tampons....). Luckily since then (a year ago) everything has been fine.

I hope you get well soon Ms Lilith....:rose:

Thank you, Bandit.. :)

Ms L: I forgot to mention that in the ultra sound before the procedure they did find a fibroid tumor inside my uterus located just opposite my cervex. He removed this as well during my procedure. Thankfully benign(most fibroids are). I'm guessing your doctor already checked out this possibility.

hehehe - you sound so much like me! I OWN sweaters. And when it gets down to about 20 degrees I can actually put away the sun dresses and wear one! (I might join you in Alaska!)
