Dem. Sheldon Whitehouse tries to explain all-white country club membership

AIUI, that kind of club won't even take Jews. Barry Goldwater himself once was denied admission to one -- he said, "But I'm only half Jewish! Can't I play nine holes?!"

Ask yourselves why aren't Lit Deplorables all over this story? It's one of the biggest Liberal critics of systemic racism, embroiled in a scandal re: an all-white club. It's a lay-up for them.

Why the silence?

I'll tell you one of the reasons why: because I posted the story, and it brings attention to the fact that they never post negative stories about Republicans. This makes them look like the weak shits they are, and destroys their "partisan hack" narrative about me.

And they know it. As you were.

Maybe some of us haven't commented on it because we sleep late and haven't seen a report on it yet. Yeah, it's hypocritical of Whitehouse to belong to a race-exclusive club and to take the public stances he takes. We'll have to see if he resigns from such a club--would rather he not stop voting progressive.

"In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the lawmaker says the Bailey's Beach Club, where Whitehouse was a member, has no rules prohibiting diversity at its club.

'The club has no racially discriminatory policy. The club confirmed for the senator that it has had and has members of color,' Whitehouse's spokesperson said. (They did not provide further documentation confirming this.)

PEOPLE's efforts to reach the club management by phone were unsuccessful on Tuesday.

The club, whose official name is the Spouting Rock Beach Association, was described by The New York Times in 2003 as `the queen of American resorts' even as the paper noted at the time that one member said of admittance: `Jewish, yes ... Blacks, not really.'"

I once read a Mad magazine anthology book, of material from 1960s issues, with a faux comic strip called "Hyman Rickover and His Submarines." A nuclear sub is being launched and a civilian asks, "What's it like when you're down in a submarine, Admiral?" He answers, "I don't know, I've never been in one." "You've never been in one?!" "That's right! Mainly because I've never been invited!"

It took me years to figure out that joke. Hyman Rickover was Jewish. In the 1960s, Jews were "not invited" to a lot of things, mostly involving WASP social functions. An upper-class Jewish and gentile boy might grow up in the same neighborhood and be childhood friends, but at a certain age their lives would diverge -- they would go to different colleges and end up in different firms or businesses and socialize in different circles.

By now, all that has substantially (not entirely) changed. Perhaps someday the similar black-white social divide will change.

Yep, we call out our own and those who we are more aligned with when they "make bad".

Repubs cuddle up or go silent.

So this is not supposed to be the kind of society that has an elite.

Says who??? Since when was the USA declared an egalitarian state??

When did we make the switch from the land of liberty to the land of equity of outcome???

But we always have.

Yea......exactly :D

Freedom of association.

That is a problem to be solved, not something to shrug over and say "That's life."

No, freedom of association is not a problem to be solved, it's a right to be protected.

A distinction without a difference.

Incorrect. One is free and voluntary association, the other is active discrimination.

It's cyclical. This kind of club is a place where elite people make contacts useful in business. To the detriment of anyone shut out.

It's not to the detriment of anyone shut out.

Two people doing business without you isn't a detriment or harm to you of any kind.

Yep, the board Trumpettes can't handle posters taking a balanced take on anything.

They have no answer for it.

They hate it.

:D

For once I would like to see one of those arrogant Rethugs call out the fuckery from their own.

They can't, like you guys said.
