Store clerk convicted of killing thief

The practice of Arabs cutting off the hand of a thief predates Muhammad or the Quran. It dates to at least the era of Jahiliyya. It's only after the Muslim concept of the left hand being unclean was the right one the favored one.
That's nice. Also irrelevant.

Plenty of places in Africa that do not practice Islam also cut the hands off of thieves.

Prove it. I asked for ONE specific country that currently does this that is NOT based on Sharia law.

So far, I've heard nothing specific.

Why should the clerk, or anyone for that matter, care about a criminal? Obviously the criminal doesn't care about the store losing money which in turn means the clerk can't get a raise.

What about the criminal? Shouldn't they be remorseful for stealing someone's property and disrupting business? What if the criminal had a gun and threatened the clerk first? Shouldn't they be remorseful for scaring the clerk into thinking they may die over a $2 can of beer?

People keep focusing on the clerk and what he did, but apparently the criminal bears no responsibility for stealing the beer and setting things in motion.
because we are all people. the clerk brandished the gun at the teen inside the shop (as a deterrent, i suppose, that didn't work). he's not so old, himself, and could have reported the theft to the police - he had all the evidence he needed. what made him think it was ever ok to fire a gun at a retreating teenaged thief? seriously, that could be anyone's kid doing wrong - could have been dealt with completely differently. instead, with his gun to hand (as is probably the norm over here, right?), it was the first thing he reached for. and now a teenager is dead. many people would have a hard time living with the results of their actions if they were the clerk. i do care that the clerk will have to live with the results of his actions. it's a shitty thing to have to live with.

losing their job? what job demands he shoots 3 times at a retreating thief for 2 beers, one dropped as he left the store? a woman standing inside the store at the time of the robbery and fatal shooting had this to say:
"As he passed me, I said, 'Don't kill him. Don't kill him. It's just a beer,'" she testified.

When Ghazali came back in the store, Loverson said she heard him say that he thinks he shot the teen.

"I said, 'I hope you didn't. Not over a dollar beer,'" she said. Loverson also did not call the police. She said during the trial that she wishes she had called the police because it could have saved Harris' life, WMC 5 reported.

the teen stealing the beer had no weapon. cctv footage shows that. he is responsible for his crime of theft. he didn't threaten the clerk or the customers inside the store. he shoplifted a beer. shoplifting a beer is not a crime worth the actions of the clerk. the clerk alone is responsible for his actions that resulted in a boy's death.

if this had been an aggravated robbery (if that's the term) where the thief was brandishing a gun and causing the clerk to feel in fear of his life, it becomes a whole other ballgame. i did a stint working for a big company here that predominantly sells lottery tickets. the amounts of money changing hands and going through those registers is A LOT. but we were told that it was our responsibility to make sure our customers and our staff were safe above and beyond the dollars in the till. we were told to hand over the money or anything demanded if we were being threatened.

this stupid young man who stole the beer was not an active threat, either inside or outside the store.

his life is worth more than a beer.

Isaac Newton's Career as Warden and Master of the Mint (1696-1727) when he had completed his scientific work is instructive.

He saw the problem of coin clipping as debasing the currency and set out to stop it by prosecuting the clippers. To this end he had the most notorious clipper, William Challenor, prosecuted and put to death in 1699.

And not just put to death. Challenor was first hanged - but only a little, then castrated with a knife on the public scaffold. His testicles were then thrown into a brazier in front of him. His abdomen was finally cut open and four horses attached with hooks and ropes ripped him into pieces before the various remains were publicly exhibited.

And this done at the insistence of arguably the most civilized intellect in the world! But at least Newton wasn't a Muslim because there's no mention of hands being cut off, though onlookers described Challenor's cries as 'most piteous.'

Historically, brutal punishment is the norm not the exception in all societies.

We seem to be getting caught up in stupid from the BBs as usual;.

If the storekeeper had chosen to call it in and get the victim medical help sooner, this might not even be a story for the BBs to blubber over.
Dude 1 might not be dead. Dude 2 might not have been charged, or at least not as heavily.

IF?

You ASSUME a lot. Medical help may not have been able to save him because there is no guarantee. In essence you're basing your entire argument on something that didn't happen yet you are proffering your total fantasy as fact.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda does not a viable defense make.

And? People die every day in stupid accidents. Their lives are worth more than that, right?

Second degree murder - apparently someone didn't think it was an accident.

He'd still be alive if he hadn't of stolen the beer.

The clerk wouldn't be going to jail.

Two families wouldn't be going through these traumatic events if this 17 year old man hadn't of stolen a beer.

It's a shame  what breaking the law can lead to.

Too bad the clerk let BB go after he "forgot" about the pack of mints in his pocket.

After me mumbled "sorry", she rolled her eyes and said "just keep it".

Oh well, maybe next time.

The things that people steal - like wow. Pity, but the sad thing is people get killed everyday for far less.

Hal, your a creature of low character to wish someone dead.

Unlike the dead man, I've never walked into a store and exited with an item I never paid for.

Pants on fire.

St. Peter remembers that time you pocketed that candy bar.

AND the time the cashier fucked up and gave you a 20 instead of a 10. You acted like you won the lotto.

It's OK, Mr. Honesty. Next time you go 1 MPH over the speed limit, I hope they don't summarily form a firing squad.

How do you have a conversation with someone who makes things up?

You can't.

The dead man should have never stolen that beer.

He'd still be alive.

The end.

Every one of us has made such a minor transgression.

Speeding even less than 5 mph over the limit has about the same penalty as shoplifting a can of beer.

It's true...the perp shouldn't have done it. Still...the penalty was ultimate.

This is not civilized society.

You can't commit a crime thinking about the penalties that you shouldn't get.

You don't know how someone is going to react.

Our society has the rules to be civil, but there are too many people who don't have the common sense or the care to follow those rules.

Yeah you don't get to talk about character.
And it's still bullshit.

A lot of people are confusing me with "BB" and Hal was one of them.

But that's fortunate, because the assholes come right out when they address me.

I don't have to wonder who's faking their personality.
