I was recently taking some pictures and accidentally made it so that they were all over 1 megabyte. i want to post them online but they dont need to be that big. is there anyway i can keep the larger ones on my hard drive and "save as" something much less so for my web postings? any advice would be nice. thanks!

You need some sort of decent imaging software.

Paint Shop Pro is fairly decent for that sort of thing. Photoshop is superb for that, but its a very expensive program.

If you can get your hands on Paint Shop, all you need to do is (a) resize the image to 800x600 for example, and reduce the DPI to less that 100 (72 is perfect for most displays).

Try checking out nonags.com for image editing software. You'll find some shareware stuff there, that isn't time limited.

There's a great free program named IrfanView, that you can get here http://www.irfanview.com, which works great.

Simply open the pictures you want to resize, and resixe to a smaller size, I'll suggest 600*450 pixels, before you save it in another location than from where you opened it.

that irfanview be good stuff, cheap (free) easy, and does the job, damn near marriage material
hehe

but realy, that is the only free software that is of any quality for doing what you need. I use Paint Shop Pro for the nittty gritty stuff, but for a quick resize it is hard to beat irfanview

Another recommendation for IrFanview

IrFanview is indeed the most cost effctive method of resizing pictures for web-posting.

Using the "Save As" or "Export" function in any image processing program will create a copy and leave the original unchanged. However, it's just as easy to copy the pictures you want to resize into a separate folder and resize the copies to avoid inadvertantly saving an edit to your original files.

If you're planning on attaching them here at Lit, then resizing to 800x600 and 102400 (100Kb) is the largest you can go. 640x480 is a more manageable size for most browser settings.

You might want to give some consideration to adjusting the compression factor for JPeg files you're preparing for web-posting. "Medium Quality" Jpeg files download much faster than "High Quality" because they're smaller files, even though the dimensions of the picture are the same.
