Hi,

I just got a message from someone over at the CM, who were saying

use lower case letters for your nick as that signafies that your submissive, upper case or Caps says your a Domme

My nickname is SexyCazzy on CM - well... the sexy part is not really important but the Cazzy part is important as it is the half of my nickname for my real name - I use Caz a lot on the Internet but decided to add on the other letters zy at the end of Cazzy for my personal reasons.

Anyway, my question is, is it really important to have your nick/username/screenname in upper case to show that you are a submissive, and Caps to show that you are a Dominator?

From my POV, I feel the screenname is not important, its the person behind the name which is important. A screenname is just a name.

Any thoughts?

Uh, no. Your response should be something like, "People who believe the capitalization or non-capitalization of screen names should indicate one's orientation are the kind of people I immediately file away into my 'horny net geek' or 'online wannabe' files. When in doubt, you should try actually READING the profile. Thank you for demonstrating that I have no reason to waste my time with you."

It's your name. Capitalize it like you want to. Anybody who really wants to take the time to get to know you will figure out if you're a dom or a sub regardless of capitalization. I'm an English major, so EVERYONE'S proper names are capitalized when I use them. I try to capitalize a screen name the way that person does, though. Besides, I'm a switch, so by that guy's reasoning, how would I properly capitalize my screen name by his standards? Bibunny? biBunny? BiBuNnY? My God, that gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Thank you! When I typed the name for CM, I didn't really think much of it, basically, it has no real meaning in the name, at least for me...well apart from the Cazzy part....but no deep meanings or anything like in the name.

I love the response you gave for this person... *laughs* my first instinct was to reply to the message with something like "hey, why should I change my name, just to suit you?" , then thought better of it.

I'm a submissive, and my name is capped. I also don't post using the lower case "i" when referring to myself, although I do cap He, His and Him when referring to Master.

I have a slave friend, whose emails are also full of the W/we, O/our style of writing when referring to herself and her Master. I find it irritating and hard to read, but that's what her Sir requires that she do so I put up with it. I just write back how I normally do :) *Oh dear, perhaps I'm not a "real"sub......* ;) :D

I used to do the W/w, O/our etc in the earlier posts, then I read some other posts, and noticed that the dashes with the letters is not really used a lot, so I stopped doing it. I always felt funny when using the dashes with the letters but thought it was a formality but I came to realise that it is not really important, what is important is the person behind the words and how he/she writes them and with some meanings behind words in a post or in an email.

I do agree with the You, Your, Him etc if a Dom requires it then I will write like that. If he does not require, then great news for me! Cos I will probably forget once in an email to write Him, You etc.... :D :D

Thank you, Bandit for your post.

And thank you, Blushing Bottom for the annoyns - what, may I ask, does they stand for? :D

As everyone has said, it is not necessary and actually is an invention of the online world, not the BDSM world as a whole. F for one is offended at the thought I would use lowercase for my name as he interprets it as saying he has chosen a lesser being, someone not quite good enough, and he certainly doesn't feel that is the case. We also find it very annoying to read all the upper/lower/slash references as Bandit said....makes your eyes go swizzy when you get to my age!!:D

Catalina :catroar:

Yes, Catalina, I do agree, it does make it difficult to read if the dashes with the letters are used, espically in an email or in a long post! :D

 Don't you love unsolicited advice?

Yes, mines in lowercase. It was originally that way when I started posting stories on eroticstories.com. I wasn't feeling well that day and really couldn't bring myself to give a damn about capitalization. I've since wished I had capitalized it, since it bugs the crap out of me. But I want to be consistant, so I'm graceanne, with all lower letters, everywhere.

Beyond that, at least at this forum, you'll find that people prefer that you use proper capitalization, good grammer, and good spelling. It makes your posts so much easier to read, and we appreciate it.

Yep, I do agree. Although, good spelling equals spelling checker for me!!

Oh, thank god for the spelling checker invention, without it, I would be LOST!! :D

Caz :rose:

**used the spelling checker for this post.....haha**

Thumbs up on spellcheckers!! :nana:

On Collar Me my name is capitalized. Like Graceanne I wish I had capitalized my name here. I was a newbie at the time.

Besides, if he isn't your Dom where does he get off telling you how to capitalize your name. I'm just being redundant after the other posts but thought I would add my 2 cents. Sometimes I do use the "letter(slash)letter" thing in some posts. Admittedly, it is usually out of laziness though. I should try to be better.

Personally, I like BiBuNny. :D ROFL

Caz, I'm switch also. The lack of capitalization in my name is just an indication of my mood when I registered. (I was writing a lot of blank verse using only lower case at the time, LOL). Never used it but just have to say that all of these CollarMe stories just get curiouser and curiouser (to quote Alice). Neon

I saw a reply in Lit's BDSM Personals that said something about people who really know what they're doing regarding BDSM know to use upper case letters for dominants and lower case letters for submissives.

I couldn't help but reply to that.

I mean, aside from online interaction, how often is capitalization an issue in real bdsm? :D

"Thank you Sir with a capital S, may i with a lower case i have another?"

What's in a name..

except that in the online world we actually have a say in what are called and how we are referred to. We get to pick our own identity. If somebody is gonna start bustin' on you about your name, they obviously lack the intellectual curiosity to ask about why you chose that name and thus have missed an opportunity to gain an insight into you.

For the most part, I pretty much agree with cat about it's importance, but I beg to differ with the practice's invention in the online world. Many well known (at least in my experience) slaves in the real world have used the lower case name convention. Two famous examples that come immediately to mind are slave david stein, creator of the "SSC" slogan for GMSMA so many years ago, and viola Johnson. Perhaps not so famous to the BDSM world as a whole, but very well known in the Southeastern part of the US, was boy bob Harris. And these folks were around and in leather well before the Internet was in common use.

Granted vi and bob capitalize their Family names, and I never asked them to explain that, but I believe that it was their belief that their family honor/position out-ranked their personal honor/position within the family. I could site other examples of people in the real world lowercasing their names, but I have no information on their involvement in BDSM or Leather. But wouldn't it be interesting to discover that e e cummings and k d lang were submissives or slaves??? ;)

LOL, in an interview I saw of kd's once, from memory she said it was about her attitude that grammar, reading etc was elitist....she said she was proud that the only book she had read was the phone book. I'm still a fan of her music, but it did sort of jade my view of her as a person and then when she toured and I met her, that went south even further. Her performance is pure gold though, and her voice remains incredible.

Whether one uses the capitalization protocol or not, it's rudely presumptive of a non-acquaintance to insist on it. Furthermore, isn't it more than a little bit hypocritical of someone who commits four spelling or grammatical errors in a single sentence to hold someone else to high standards of typographical usage?

Sub or not... Hell, I'm a Dom... And I swear that starts to give me a headache after trying to read it for too long... Honestly, I won't even try to read a post with that {W/we} in it anymore.

*grin*

Though on further thought, someone could start an entire thread of random "CollarMe" B.S. stories....
