Say hey, hi and thanks - no pressure

Hey jomar, i'm joey, welcome :)

(how old is one supposed to be to belong to the old farts club, sure seem to be some interesting folk there?* ;)

I'm not quite AARP material, but I'm with you in spirit (creaky joints and all :D ). I'm with you on the need for covertness. In my case it's both my job and my personal life that could become a pain in the ass.

It's good to have you here J. I've read a number of posts by you that were very interesting and I loved the iceberg AV (talk about perspective  ). I'm coming up on a year here and still feel like a newbie, so 6 months is not too late for a hello thread. ;)

Joey,

IMHO, being an AHOF (Author's Hangout Old Fart) is more a state of mind (such as we still have left) rather than a chronological determination.

Do I get AARP membership? I'm 26 today! Another year closer to death and/or turning 40. :(

And welcome from a fellow (?) newbie.

Hello Jomar and belated welcome, and welcome starrkers and the others who are introducing themselves in this thread.

My name is Og, long-dead King of Bashan, but I don't stand on ceremony. Addressing me as Og is sufficient. When I'm in character as Henry VIII, that's different. My Royal Headsman is instantly available to correct any deficiencies of respect.

What is AARP? I presume it's a US-only thing.

I know I'm an AHOF. I also have my Senior Citizen's Bus Pass that I have used only once - the bus was too full of Senior Citizens for me to repeat the experience.

Sometimes I feel much older than my current physical body perhaps because I spent significant parts of my childhood in the company of interesting relatives from the Victorian era. My childhood memories include "I know because I was there" accounts of Queen Victoria's Jubilees, the Boer War and Mafeking (and of course the long-awaited relief of Ladysmith), my relations' activities as Suffragists (not Suffragettes), the carnage of the First World War etc. Maybe I was a good listener. One of my friend's fathers spent several hours talking to me about his experiences on the Western Front, much to the surprise of his wife and children because he had never said a word about them previously.

AARP = American Association of Retired People. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AARP

I recall that in 1976, amid all the hoopla about the US bi-centenial, my mother admitted to being stunned at the thought she'd been alive for 25% of the country's history.

But seriously folks, it's a new trend. One of those touchy-feel-good deals.

It is? I just thought I ignored forum protocol/niceties. Does that mean we don't have to worry about being be politically correct then?

In the last couple of years I have been mistaken for 40 (two years ago) and mid twenties (last week). My age doesn't know if it's going up or down! (I'm 31, and it's going up just like everyone else but Merlin, he is travelling throuhg time backwards, which is why he knows what is going to happen next).

Hey guys...

Yes. But few can retire at 50 when the AARP starts sending its propoganda.

Well, personal life too, I'm not as open as Cloudy. And I spotted a Literotica link on one of my daughter's friends web page (when I was monitoring her browsing). Thanks, and I think the iceberg is becoming my default AV - I like the symbolism too. ;)

Thank you for the explanation.

However, surely your mother was wrong. The history of America predates 1776 by a very long way, as exemplified by Her Majesty's visit to Jamestown, and, of course, Native American history. I couldn't make that mistake. I live only a couple of miles from a Roman fort and there are stone age artefacts frequently found within less than a mile of my house. My country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, has only existed in that form since 1922.

I've been here for about six months now and this is the first online community I've ever been involved with. When I first joined I submitted a couple of stories and dove in here without any understanding of online etiquette. I posted some, started some silly threads and some more thoughtful threads, managing to avoid the dreaded "How until long..." question along the way. Since I've been here I've noticed a number of people formally introducing themselves. So...

I'd like to be as open as many of you, but because of my job I just don't feel I can be (though clues get dropped unless we're hermits, eh?). Having said that, I'm East coast, have recently been receiving AARP mailings (old fart club for those of you not familiar) but look and feel younger than I am (really!). Been married many good years, have a son in his first year of high school and a daughter in her first year of college. And a dog that's getting visibly older as the days go by.

As I said, I just dove in and have met and talked to many wonderful people in my short time here. So, this is my formal "Hello." I try to be respectful and I thank you all for for your kindness and acceptance. I certainly look forward to more fun here.

No pressure to respond; this is my thanks to all of you. Many of you have been here long enough so there is no need, but for some, if you never introduced yourself feel free to do so - if you want.

Good to *officially* meetcha, my fellow waterbearer! ;)

Welcome to the AH and may you have a long and happy stay here!

Imagine that. We danced with no introduction at the prom. How did the chaperons let that happen?

Thanks and I hope to. :)

The chaperones were swapping their winnings from the betting pool at the time :D

That sounds like an idea for a story.

Just the "important" bits

Hey everybody.

I'm sad to say that I, too, have been remiss in introducing myself.
How very un-ladylike of me. Emily Post would be horrified, I'm sure.
Still, Jomar made such a nice thread, and I do feel rather cozy in the AH most of the time, so I shall give an official hello and then tuck up and have a nice natter with some excellent folks.

So, um, hi. :)

There's currently (or was when I first wrote this) a lovely sunset in my neck of the woods (Northeast America), and I'm happy to be shirking some adult responsibilities (cleaning, calling the cable company to ask where they get off raising my bill $50 out of nowhere) to be posting this.

Some random bits and bobs:
1) I work at a newspaper with some lovable kooks.
2) I will never understand how to play Su Doku. Dammit.
3) I've always loved writing and reading, but would consider myself more of an editor than a writer. I try to write and it just sounds so middling, I can't figure out if it's any good. So I prefer to encourage other people.
4) Jomar and I have a freakish "we-think-of-the-same-movie-at-the-same-time" kinda thing. We seem to be filmographically linked. *spooky music*
5) I use parentheses waaaaaay too much.
6) I really don't like pickles.

So, yeah. Thanks, AH.
Go careful. :rose:

Come on. You know that when I see you in action it's like getting a free time-travel card to watch the Roman Gladiators fuck shit up and make it cry.
