Cold Contacts

LOL - you'll have to let us know what happens, Imp.

Okay -- after a couple months of back & forth e-mails, Mr. Winters contacted me yesterday expressing an interest in my old 1st/2nd person piece "Allure." (Yes, it's still posted on Lit & no, I won't have to remove it.) He asks that I bring it up to 1400 words, though. No biggie.

He wants 7-year exclusive audio rights and 1-year non-exclusive rights for other forms (print, electronic, etc.). His venture (which will operate under the company "Sensual Whispers Publishing, Ltd.") is geared primarily toward audio erotica; downloadable, I assume, or delivered via CD.

This appears to be a decent home for those oft-maligned & difficult to publish 1st/2nd person letter-like pieces.

Will let y'all know if I get paid promptly, etc.

Rob,

I also got a cockroach msg, maybe a day or two ago. Same deal. That's a system used by some legit publishers who put our serial books in genres such as westerns. But even in the very, very, very unlikely event they're legit, it's not for me, either. I've already deleted my cockroach-gram.

Whore that I am...

At this point I'd write ten serial Westerns if it would get me started in the direction I want to go. *shrugs* From a practical viewpoint: they're easy money, and the chance of writer's block is nearly nil. I have in the past made quite a bit of extra cash for various projects by doing customized erotica gift baskets - birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties, anniversaries - that kind of thing. You'd be amazed at how easy it is to turn out some beautiful work from a given list of requirements.

And as I said before; it's easy money, and I am still remodeling my kitchen.

Yeah, that actually sounds like it would be kind of fun. I would certainly take it as an interesting challenge. Didn't many great artists like DaVinci work on commision making pieces to the specification of the purchaser? (not that porn is great art... I'm just saying)

Got paid (via PayPal) ... $90 for 1,400 words of 1st/2nd person stuff. For that, I sold 7 year exclusive audio rights and 1 year non-exclusive print/electronic rights. Not too shabby, really.

I'd have to sell 180+ copies (at the current eBook download rate) to make $90 on a short story's royalties ... and I can still sell the piece again. My publisher said that extant audio rights would not be a deal-breaker for most e-publishers.

I'm intimidated as hell right now.

Well ... you can be stagnant & get nowhere, or you can take a chance. *shrug* Easy decision, if you ask me.

I've made it, I just don't know where to start yet.

Glad to hear it! I wish I'd gone ahead and signed up with him even tho I was totally overwhelmed when he made the offer. When I finally had some time, I sent him an email and he told me they had enough authors. It's a shame I'm so short-sighted sometimes.

For electronic, start HERE.

For traditional publication, buy a copy of Writer's Market. ;)

Thanks. I've got Writer's Market and I've marked the listings that I want to try, but before I start sending stuff in the traditional way, with query letters and SASEs... you know? I want to experiment a little before I take that plunge.
